Angel Phanuel – the “face of God”

clip_image002

Is Phanuel the ancient name of the angel of the Lord?

If not, then what happened to him?

Phanuel is the name given to a possible fourth Archangel in the Book of Enoch after Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel.

He is also considered to be the ruler of the Ophanim.

His name means "the face of God.” His was one of the four voices Enoch heard praising God.

There are a host of angels mentioned in the Bible, yet very few individual names are given.

Could other names exist, and they are recorded elsewhere?

The Book of Enoch is a separate book, which is possibly a legitimate missing book. I will look at what it says.

Some discredit the Book of Enoch, since it is missing in the present Bible version.

Issue of using a “missing text”

It is possible to have a “missing text. For example

Num 21:14 Wherefore it is said in the book of the wars of the LORD, What he did in the Red sea, and in the brooks of Arnon,

Although the book is mentioned, it was somehow not preserved.

There is also no book of Adam and Eve, Shem, Noah, Abraham, etc. mentioned in the bible, yet we know that their stories were passed down to their generations.

BEFORE the FLOOD, it may have been that stories were passed on more by word of mouth, than by writing, then eventually someone wrote it down later, but it was a private copy.

I cannot imagine someone writing the “book of Noah,” and planning on saving for a bible that would one day exist.

Later on, when Moses was called, books started being recorded and preserved for posterity, to instruct the nation of Israel.

Before Moses, the first 5 books of the Bible were not written either.

The 4 Angels around the throne, according to Enoch

40.2 I looked, and on the four sides of the Lord of Spirits, I saw four figures, different from those who were standing; and I learnt their names, because the Angel who went with me made known their names, and showed me all the secret things.

40.3 And I heard the voices of those four figures as they sang praises in front of the Lord of Glory.

40.4 The first voice blesses the Lord of Spirits forever and ever.

40.5 And the second voice I heard blessing the Chosen One and the chosen who depend on the Lord of Spirits.

40.6 And the third voice I heard, petitioned, and prayed, on behalf of those who dwell on dry ground and supplicate in the name of the Lord of Spirits.

40.7 And the fourth voice I heard driving away the Satans and not allowing them to come in front of the Lord of Spirits to accuse those who dwell on the high ground.

40.8 And after this I asked the Angel of Peace, who went with me, and showed me everything which is secret: "Who are those four figures, whom I have seen, and whose words I have heard and written down?"

Phanuel – one of the 4 voices

In the book of Enoch, there is a special angel who is set over the repentance of those who inherit eternal life.

Enoch mentions 4 arch angels: Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, and Phanuel.

40.9 And he said to me: "This first one, is the Holy Michael, the merciful and long-suffering. And the second, who is in charge of all the diseases, and in charge of all the wounds of the sons of men, is Raphael. And the third, who is in charge of all the powers, is the Holy Gabriel. And the fourth, who is in charge of repentance, and hope of those who will inherit eternal life, is Phanuel.

Here the 4 angels are mentioned as administering punishment to the wicked on the day of judgment.

54.6 And Michael and Gabriel, Raphael and Phanuel – these will take hold of them on that great day. And throw them, on that day, into the furnace of burning fire, so that the Lord of Spirits may take vengeance on them for their iniquity, in that they became servants of Satan, and led astray those who dwell upon the dry ground.

4 Angels around the Throne, who come and go

71.8 And I saw Angels, who could not be counted, a thousand thousands and ten thousand times ten thousand, surrounding that house. And Michael, and Raphael, and Gabriel, and Phanuel, and the Holy Angels who are in the Heavens above, went in and out of that house.

71.13 And that Head of Days came with Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Phanuel, and thousands and tens of thousands of Angels without number.

On this site, there is an objection to the Book of Enoch:

http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/Wolves/book_of_enoch.htm

it says:

“The Bible never mentions an angel named Phanuel, let alone an angel who is set over the repentance of those who inherit eternal life.”

We read in 1st Timothy 2:5 that Jesus Christ is the ONLY Mediator between God and men, not some angel named Phanuel..

seraph

But who is Phanuel? Is he known by another name?

An angel who forgives sins:

The angel of the Lord appeared before Joshua and removed his iniquity:

Zec 3:1 ¶ And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

Zec 3:3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.

Zec 3:4 And he answered and spoke unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.

Only God / Jesus can remove sins.

So Jesus must be the angel of the Lord?

Maybe the angel of the Lord’s name is Phanuel?

Is Phanuel and Jesus the same “being?”

Interestingly, the name Phanuel means the “face of God.”

Jesus always said, if you see me, you see the Father. So this would make sense.

But is this association with Phanuel true?

The angel Phanuel mysteriously got dropped from mention in the bible.

So what happened to him?

The Chosen One

Enoch also mentions the Messiah figure – the Chosen One.

45.3 “On that day the Chosen One will sit on the Throne of Glory and will choose their works. And their resting places will be without number and their spirits within them will grow strong when they see My Chosen One and those who appeal to My Holy and Glorious Name.

45.4 And on that day I will cause My Chosen One to dwell among them and I will transform Heaven and make it an Eternal Blessing and Light.

49.2 For He is powerful in all the secrets of righteousness and iniquity will pass away like a shadow, and will have no existence; for the Chosen One stands in front of the Lord of Spirits and His Glory is for ever and ever, and His Power for all generations.

51.3 And in those days, the Chosen One will sit on his throne, and all the Secrets of Wisdom will flow out from the council of his mouth, for the Lord of Spirits has appointed him and glorified him.

52.6 And these mountains, that you have seen; the mountain of iron, and the mountain of copper, and the mountain of silver, and the mountain of gold, and the mountain of soft metal, and the mountain of lead. All these in front of the Chosen One will be like wax before fire, and like the water that comes down from above onto these mountains they will be weak under his feet.

52.9 All these will be wiped out and destroyed from the face of the earth when the Chosen One appears in front of the Lord of Spirits."

55.4 "You powerful kings who dwell upon the dry ground will be obliged to watch my Chosen One sit down on the throne of My Glory, and judge, in the Name of the Lord of Spirits, Azazel and all his associates and all his hosts."

Questions:

Phanuel is mentioned in the Book of Enoch, but not the Scriptures that follow in time.

Only the other 3 angels are mentioned by name – Michael, Raphael, and Gabriel.

1. What happened to Phanuel? Is he still present, but now known by another name?

Having 4 creatures or beings around the throne is confirmed in other ways in the bible.

Eze 1:5 Also out of the midst thereof [came] the likeness of four living creatures. And this [was] their appearance; they had the likeness of a man.

Eze 1:15 Now as I beheld the living creatures, behold one wheel upon the earth by the living creatures, with his four faces.

Mat 24:31 And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other.

Rev 7:1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree.

Rev 7:2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea,

Rev 9:15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.

2. Is Phanuel the “angel of the Lord” that met with and removed the iniquity from Joshua?

*** a separate post on the “angel of the Lord” is needed to look closely at all his characteristics

3. Is the “angel of the Lord” the pre-incarnate Messiah, whose previous name was Phanuel?

4. Did Phanuel change names to enter an earthly realm?

5. Or was the Chosen One a separate heavenly figure?

6. If the Chosen One was separate, then what was his name in heaven before he came to earth?

  1. This seems probably belonging to the so-called ‘angel Christology’. E.g. Jehovah’s witnesses say the pre-incarnate Logos was no other than Michael archangel.

  2. I am not expert on the Book of Enoch, but I read once it was left out of the Bible due to all the Angles in it, and the worry was simple men would worship powerful Angles.

In ch. 25 of the Book of Enoch it reads about a tree that reaches into Heaven, and is the Throne of G-d.

Ch. 38 G-d’s Righteous One is stated. In ch. 41 he Judges all, and again in ch. 45 my elect one.

I think this is the word of G-d made flesh. The Righteous One who judges all. That part of G-d the Father that has been part of the Father from the start.

The four Angles, are still the four powerful Angles that have always been there.

    • I read once it was left out of the Bible due to all the Angles in it, and the worry was simple men would worship powerful Angles
As we can read from Paul in Colossians, the danger is there anyway. Who was responsible for the assembling of the bible as we know it today? Do you think, God would worry?

  3. Marianne, who do you think, Melchizedek is?
Some say that he is a pre-incarnate and wherever the angel of the Lord is mentioned. However, the angel of the Lord is also mentioned while Jesus Christ was already on the earth.

    • hi gyod

Yes I saw that. I tracked all the references for the angel of the Lord, and they were all consistent with the idea that Jesus could have been this person. Then in the NT, it mentions the angel of the Lord again, after Jesus was born.

      Now, I have to question
      1. because of language constructs, between Greek and Hebrew, is the OT version “the” angel of the Lord, and the NT version “an” angel of the Lord?

All heavenly angels are angels of the Lord, and there are many of them. The question is – is one different from them all?

      Or

      2. I am offtrack about the angel of the Lord completely< and he is just "an" angel?

      • When it’s says “the” angel of the Lord, it is speaking about one of the four Angels. When it says “an” angel of the; it can be any angel other than one of the four, I believe.

        • johnson

I looked it up on google translate.

if I say “I see an angel” then it translates to 3 words in hebrew

if I say ” I see the angel” then it translate to 4 words in hebrew, with an extra “Ha” prefix in front of the word angel

in greek, I see an angel, and I see THE angel, translates to 3 words each, but the middle word is different.

so there is a way to tell.

  4. In the OT, “the Angel of the Lord” (capital A) was the pre-carnate Jesus. I believe Melchizedek is a manifestation of Him too, as our Eternal High Priest. References to “the/an angel of the Lord” (small a), are creating-being angels. Btw, my maiden name is PENUEL – “face of God”. :-> I’m reading the Book of Enoch too; it seems to have lots of relevance to the end times.

    • Cindy, I hope your studies are going well, I’d love to meet Phan. Kind of missing my brothers. Grievous is horsepoop and a fallen.

    • My Mother’s maiden name was Pennell. If you look in Ancestry.com, all variations, including Phanuel, are related. The Old Testament speaks of Peniel as a place where Jacob wrestled with an angel. The angel changed his name to Israel, and Jacob named the place of this occurrence Peniel, ‘the face of G~d’, “for I have seen G~d face to face and my life is preserved.” Reference Genesis 32:30-31. So welcome to the family Cindy. Surely, you are my cousin! We will meet in Heaven!

  5. I have read that there are better bibles to read due to people altering them further. Can anyone suggest which version is better than the other. My questions pertains to the subject at hand. I was given a bible many years ago that had the book of Enoch in it and almost wanna say that had other books in it that I do not see in other bibles now. I wish I could find that bible. BTW I do believe Jesus has many names which could very well be the name of the subject at hand.

    • hi Debra

I had a copy of one of those bibles too. It has the Apocrypha in it. Thomas Nelson Publishers may have a copy for you. Go to a local bookstore and order a copy.

    • God’s word translation and in Hebrew, the original. Meet any good angels in your travels in life? You seem like a really nice person.
Figure out how I get demonized everyday. Lovely tribulation isn’t it?
Let me know if you need help, there is a reason why Christ sowed I’m #2.

  6. please I need a list of unique names of other Angels and also other unique nqmes too. I like good names and will like my children to bear them. Phanuel in deed is the face of GOD. Hope to hear from you.

  7. Didn’t Jacob call the place where he wrestled the devil Peniel – the face of God? Because, God in His wisdom recompenses evil eye for an eye – because fallen angels rebelled against him – and when we rebel/wrestle against devil veil falls off and we see face of God.

    • We wrestle with the devil everyday Gavriel. I sometimes feel like the fallen angels are trying to replace the “good” angels in their work, position and authority here on earth. The “good” angels, Michael, Gabriel, Raphael and Phanuel are not old men in their 80’s and 90’s. They are in their 30’s, look young and strong, even if they are being crucified and killed in the name of “Jesus”, that is why they are resurrected at the 7th Trumpet before they throw all the fallen and wicked into judgement. I think people get lost, confused and deceived in their own vain imaginations and dreams that just are not reality. As long as we do not rebel against G-D, as much as we have sinned, we will be fine. If we continue to run after other gods, we will run into trouble with our brother Moses. I personally love the law and I am having a sincere issue with the Cain-annites.
When was the last time you sought the Lord and your brethren?

      • Michael, can we be friends? I have some questions

      • You are suggesting that angels are mediators between God and men and that one of them was crucified and was named Jesus.

Everything is so ridiculous and stupid that I don’t even know where to start.

Well, no, I know, I definitely know. Throw all your jewish books from your idolized rabbis to the garbage and stop believing falsehood from men, specially those who are by biblical definition antichrists.

      • Micheal can we be friends ,I would love to learn and know more

  8. Thanks for caring, please I will really need the list
but please, with their meanings. Sincerely yours. God bless.

    • Uriel – God is my illumination, or God is my light
      Raguel- Friend of God
Michael – WHo is like God
Saraquel – Seraphiel – Chammuel – he who sees God
Gabriel – God is my strength
Zotiel / Zophiel / Jophiel – beauty of God
Raphael – God heals, or healing power of God
      Ariel – lion of God
phanuel – peniel – face of God

  9. Amerlore says:

    http://www.ortzion.org/Jacob_wrestl.html

    Genesis 26:2-4; Hebrews 6:17-18; Romans 11:28-29; Gen. 28:13-15; 25:22-23; 32:1-13, 22-30; Ephesians 6:12; Luke 10:19; Hosea 12:3-4

    Purpose of this teaching:

    A) To present an interpretation consistent with: G-d’s faithfulness; the context of the story; New Testament teachings and our own, personal experiences.

    B) To demonstrate that correct interpretation is only possible by carefully examining the original text rather than a translation of the original .

    Motif for the teaching:

    A) Out of jealousy for our Heavenly Father, it grieves me that G-d is thought to be acting like man Whose word cannot be relied upon and Whose oath is not trustworthy. G-d does not say one thing and mean another; nor does He promise something in His own Name and then retract it; nor must we beg Him to bless us AFTER He has already PROMISED to bless us.

Just as Job’s friends spoke falsely of G-d, so do I regard as false teaching the notion that it was a holy angel of G-d, or even the Lord Yeshua Himself, that fell upon G-d’s chosen. It was no “godly angel” but some “divine being” with intent to harm. Any other teaching misrepresents the G-d we know.

    http://www.ortzion.org/Jacob_wrst0.html

The only reason that I teach on the subject of Jacob’s wrestling at all is out of a holy jealousy for our Heavenly Father Who, by this traditional teaching, is being portrayed as a liar and One Whose promises cannot be trusted. Many people are not conscious of the significance of such interpretation. With my teaching I want to make them aware of it. However, some people have actually taken offense at my teaching and rejected me for it, even certain people who had called themselves my “dear friends.” Yes, the Truth is truly a two-edged sword, dividing spirit from soul…

In any event, before I get to the actual wrestling, let me lay some groundwork first in order for you to see WHY the teaching that it was an angel of G-D wrestling with Jacob portrays G-d as a liar. I hope you will get blessed by my teaching, and find your own discoveries and conclusions confirmed within the Scriptural context.

    1. First of all, G-d entered into a covenant with Abraham, swearing by Himself and sealing it with heavenly fire, saying (in Gen. 15:17-20) “to your (Abraham’s) descendants I give this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the river Euphrates, the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim (which were giants), the Amorites, the Cannanites (which included the Philistines), the Girgashites and the Jebusites.” G-d confirmed this covenant once more after Abraham had willingly given up Isaac, saying, “By Myself I have sworn…” (Gen. 22:16).

It is this covenant, which Yitzhak Rabin transgressed and for which he paid with his life, even as it is “prophesied” in that very portion of Scripture. For precisely in that week in which this [Scripture] Parsha was read in all of our Synagogues, Rabin was assassinated. Those versed in Hebrew and the Scriptures, found that by ignoring the spaces between the words and reading only the letters in verse 17 reads, beginning with the word “esh/fire” from the “burning lamp”: “esh esh ra ba rabin [hagzerim]” = “Evil fire fire into Rabin [G-d decreed].” Three bullets were fired, of which two were deadly.

The violation of THIS covenant, which G-d confirmed with an oath by His own Name and with heavenly fire (i.e. interposing with an oath of two unchangeable things through which it is impossible that G-d should prove false – Heb. 6:17), always will carry the most dire consequences for whomever breaks it, especially of course for the Jews.

    2. G-d confirmed this Covenant to Isaac as a “sworn promise” in Gen. 26:3.

    3. G-d confirmed this Covenant once more to Jacob BEFORE he became “Israel,” in Gen. 28:13-15, when G-d appeared to him at Beth-el standing above the ladder. Furthermore, G-d said, “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done that of which I have spoken to you.”

These three sworn promises of G-d to the three patriarchs are reiterated in Psalm 105:8-11.

    4. When Jacob deceived his father Isaac to obtain the patriarchal blessing, it was in response and obedience to his mother’s wish (in those days the word of a parent – whether father or mother – carried much weight). It hadn’t been his idea but his mother’s, Rebeccah, Laban’s sister. It is important to bear this in mind because it is Laban, his mother’s brother, Jacob’s uncle, who indeed is the cheater, liar, trickster and deceiver. The saying, “Are you an Aramean to me?”, in reference to cheating Laban, is still in use today.

Furthermore, this event took place AFTER Esau had sold his birthright to Jacob. Jacob and Rebeccah did not just “out of the blue” decide to “steal” it from Esau (as is frequently taught). No, rather, Esau had already ceded it to them with his actions, by essentially despising his birthright and the patriarchal blessings he was to receive. These things weren’t worth more to him than a plate of lentils.

Esau was a creature of impulse who, in the heat of the moment, gave no thought to value and consequences. Thinking he could have the pot of lentils AND the blessings He took the whole matter rather lightly because, of course, the father would bless HIM and not Jacob. So, what did it matter if he “sold” his birthright now? He did not take it serious — but Jacob did! It is THAT what G-d saw, what made Him “love” Jacob and “hate” Esau.

Jacob knew of the promise G-d made to his mother in Gen. 25:22-23, saying, “… the elder shall serve the younger.” Jacob not only knew of it but also believed it, as did Rebeccah. Fearful that G-d’s purpose could get swarted, Rebeccah rushed to “help” G-d a little to fulfill His promise by talking Jacob into the deception (see Gen. 27:5-14).

And you know, Diane, sometimes I get a little indignant at self-righteous Christians who pass judgment on Rebeccah and Jacob, while they themselves have done the same thing — “helping” G-d a little along in fulfilling the promise. Rebeccah and Jacob acted from faith. (For it is impossible to please G-d apart from faith, wherefore G-d also says, “Jacob I have loved, but I have hated Esau” – [Mal. 1:2-3; Ro 9:13] – because Esau was an immoral and irreligious man [see Heb. 12:16-17], guided by carnal desires and impulses rather than by faith). Abraham and Sarah also had “helped” G-d a little with the promise by Sarah giving Hagar to Abraham, to have the promised son by her.

All these wonderful and great saints were also very human, something most comforting to me, as it assures me that I, too, have every chance in Yeshua despite shortcomings and failures. Feeling superior to Rebeccah and Jacob is somewhat insincere and pharisaic, because then we fail to see our own shortcomings. Yet, we are to judge ourselves first, before we look for the splinter in the eyes of others.

    5. Jacob’s “transformation” did not take place only at the time of the wrestling – as is routinely taught in the churches – but already during his years of service at Laban’s. The transformation of Jacob, the “supplanter” of his brother, was very sudden and extremely painful. It occurred in the night when Leah, older sister of Rachel, “supplanted” Rachel in the bridal bed. Jacob had labored for Rachel 7 years, but because he loved her so much they “seemed to him but a few days” (Gen. 29:20),.

In the morning after the wedding night the realization that he had been terribly tricked and cheated out of his rightful bride, struck Jacob with numbing force. It was a blow so terrible it “converted” Jacob instantly from the cheating supplanter into the most honest man on the face of the earth. It was NOT because Laban had cheated HIM, but because he suddenly realized the enormity of the deception he had committed against his father and brother.

This realization – experiencing the very thing he himself had done in his own person now – totally overwhelmed and crushed Jacob. He was undone by it, and his repentance went to great extremes as is clearly seen by his actions following this experience. This repentance, deep remorse, grief and guilt over his own actions toward father and brother contributed to his willingness to agree to Laban’s deal to serve him for an additional 7 years in order to get Rachel as his wife after all.

As we follow Jacob’s story, we discover that for the 14 years in which he served Laban, Jacob had gained no possessions for himself. He had the two wives, the two concubines, and his children, but no possessions, because all belonged to Laban, his father-in-law. When Jacob wanted to return home, having completed his agreed upon service (still penniless, mind you!), Laban urged him to remain because he had learned by divination, that G-d blessed his household on account of Jacob. Indeed, he had had little before Jacob came to him (one of the factors pointing to this is that his daughter Rachel, the younger of two daughters, was keeping his sheep. Laban had no sons at the time, and only few sheep). So he said, “name your wages, and I will give it” (Gen. 30:25-28).

Thereupon Jacob reminded Laban of his faithful service, how Laban’s possessions had increased abundantly because the L-RD was blessing Laban on account of and by Jacob’s work, and then asked: “But now when shall I provide for my own household also?”

This was Jacob’s situation. He had made no extra demands, but just worked hard for his two wives.

Now, let me make it short. Laban said, “What shall I give you?”, and Jacob replied, “You shall not give me anything.” Then he struck a deal with Laban that he, Jacob, would seek out all the spotted and speckled among the sheep and the goats. These would constitute his wages. This kind of sheep got the lowest price on the market, because people wanted the pure white wool, not the streaked and spotted.

Then Jacob said, “So my HONESTY will answer for me later when you come to look into my wages…” Jacob now spoke of his honesty because indeed he practiced an honesty that bordered on self-deprivation.

Laban agreed to the deal, but that same day removed all such animals as agreed upon and put them in charge of his sons (here we learn for the first time that Laban had now sons also), and furthermore removed them from Jacob a 3 days’ journey. Laban was and remained the “trickster” and “cheat”, yet it is Jacob who has been accused of being that since the Exodus from Egypt.

Now from the Scriptures we learn how honest Jacob was, and how G-d was with him at all times. Jacob called Rachel and Leah to come to him in the field, away from Laban’s ears, and there he told them about their father, and that “the G-d of my father has been with me… your father has cheated me and changed my wages ten times, but G-D did NOT PERMIT HIM TO HARM ME.” Whatever Laban said should be Jacob’s wages, whether the spotted or the streaked, that’s what all the flocks bore. Because the Angel of the L-RD had appeared to Jacob and shown him the “trick” with the rods taken from the almond, poplar and plane. And the Angel said to him, “I AM the G-d of Beth-el, where you anointed a pillar and made a vow to me… return to the land of your birth.”

When Laban pursued fleeing Jacob to take everything away from him, Jacob repeated his claim that “… you [Laban] have changed my wages ten times. IF THE G-D OF MY FATHER, THE G-D OF ABRAHAM AND THE FEAR OF ISAAC, HAD NOT BEEN ON MY SIDE, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. G-d saw my affliction and the labor of my hands, and REBUKED YOU LAST NIGHT.” For G-d had spoken to Laban in a dream saying, “Take heed that you say not a word to Jacob, either good or bad.” Therefore Laban said to Jacob, “But WHAT CAN I DO THIS DAY to my daughter, or to their children… [i.e., to Jacob]?” (Read the whole story from Gen. 30:30-31:1-54).

Indeed, he could do nothing to Jacob to harm him, because Jacob was G-d’s chosen, and G-d was with him according to His oath and promise.

So, my dear Diane, now that I have laid this groundwork for you that you may clearly see where G-d was standing with Jacob, and Jacob with G-d, we proceed to the wrestling, an account which, I believe, has been misinterpreted and thereby misrepresented G-d for many centuries.

You see, it is because of the image that “Rome” has painted of the Jew that Jacob has been pictured as this base trickster and greedy cheat who, having finally arrived at his wits’ end, was confronted with the angel of G-d, and in this wrestling experienced his “conversion.” Folks have taken offense at my teaching simply because they are unwilling to see and accept Jacob as the honest and holy man Scripture depicts him as having become while laboring in Laban’s service.

Through the years I have observed in Churches and in Sunday schools how Jacob is being pictured in the minds of many people: the little, bent-over Jew with the typical “Jew” nose and chin, tricky, cheating, manipulating, and greedy. Never mind that Scripture speaks of Jacob as a very handsome man (Gen. 25:27). The word describing Jacob is “tam” – Strong’s Concordance 8535 – meaning especially “finished and complete.” This word is also used in prayer, blessings and modern Hebrew. The word implies “perfection” – both physical and spiritual – because it is especially used in connection with the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple, in anticipation of the Messianic Reign, the reign of “perfection.”

I.e., Jacob was not merely a “plain” or a “quiet” man who happened to be of smooth skin, but one whose “perfection” became such that it was “complete,” because it was BOTH physical AND spiritual. “Tam” also means “pious,” and despite teaching to the contrary, Jacob was INDEED a “pious” man, namely a “man of faith.”

In addition to that he possessed great strength (see Gen. 29:1-10; 31:35): the account of his rolling a large stone from off a watering well – which usually took 3 men to roll away – attests to that, as well as the story of his setting up a large stone as a pillar for a witness between him and Laban. The hardship of tending to the flocks day and night, regardless of weather and beasts, also testifies to his enduring strenth..

Furthermore, Jacob grew exceedingly rich (Gen. 30:43) because G-d blessed and prospered him in accordance with G-d’s OATH and PROMISE, and NOT because Jacob was manipulative and greedily hording every coin. He was on his way back to the promised land in obedience to G-d’s command (31:30), when he was met by a group of angels (these being indeed angels of G-d), whom Jacob recognized at once as a “camp of G-d,” and called that particular place (ha’makom ha’who) “two camps.” They met him upon entrance into the Promised Land.

And now, Diane, may this my teaching help you see more clearly Jacob, the champion of G-d and prince and heir, ISRAEL, patriarch of a people from whom the Messiah has come. The children of this Patriarch are Israelites, Champions of G-d as well, Contenders for the Divine, conquering by strength from Above. It is this people whom Satan has been and still is desperately trying to destroy.

May you be a lover and defender of the Truth, and while not making an issue of this teaching and not allowing yourself to be drawn into a controversy over it, be ever a defender of the holiness of our G-d’s Name, who stands for justice and righteousness, Truth, Love, Faith, Hope, Light, Goodness, Kindness, Mercy, Compassion, and so much more. G-d does not change! It grieves and offends me when He is being misrepresented, just as Job’s “friends” also did. Had it not been for Job interceding on their behalf, it would have gone ill with them.

That is also the reason why we should teach on this “wrestling of Jacob,” that it may not go ill with those who keep misrepresenting our Heavenly Father. However, I repeat it once more, do not enter into a controversy over it, nor take offense at those who won’t accept the teaching but rather reject it, and you on account of it. Only pray that the Lord may open the eyes of their understanding.

G-d bless, and keep you in His Truth for Life.

    Yours in Yeshua,
    Annelore

    • The wrestling with Jacob provides a great story, I also like how Jacob gets to take on 2 wives also, a servant girl actually gives birth to the lineage of David.

I haven’t spoken to a Rachel in over 7 years, they all avoid the truth. Weak women are not listening to G-D. It seems like too many women in the church actually like the fact that the “good” angels are being crucified while they get to sleep around with fallen angels who misrepresent Christ’s church. Makes no sense why believing women won’t help the “good” angels.

I am the true vine, you are the branches. – John 15

      • Michael,

Ummm, Above you say that, “a servant girl actually gives birth to the lineage of David.”
Well, if you are speaking of King David, (Malkhut Beit David (מלכות בית דוד) or the “Royal House of David”) then your statement would be incorrect.

King David is from the lineage of “Judah”, (praised, Now I will praise the LORD) who was the fourth (4th.) of Jacob’s children which he had with his first wife “Leah”.
The maidservants, “Bilhah” gave birth to “Dan”and “Naphtali” (the 5th. and 6th. children respectively), and “Zilpah” to “Gad” and “Asher” the 7th. and 8th.

Just thought that I would clear that inaccuracy up.

  10. Hi,
why don’t we go on a kind of prayer that’ll last for a number of months, asking the almighty for an answer.
Phanuel could be Jesus or maybe not. Instead of concluding on what we don’t know, why don’t we go to God?

    • hi Michelle

Phanuel is a mystery to me. It would be a wonderful thing to know about Jesus in his pre-incarnate existence. I think going to God in prayer about this is a good idea.

      • Dear Marianne, I am amazed at this study. To be honest, I am a saved Christian, but don’t understand half of what you Jews are saying. At the same time, I just wish to tell you that I read on a site called Gracetoyou.org. I first read of the angel of the Lord being Jesus in this site. Also it mentioned that the last time the angel of the Lord is mentioned in the bible is just before the annunciation. After that the Lord was born and no longer was the Angel of the Lord mentioned. . I am stunned at the parallel drawn in your writing and truly now believe the Holy Spirit is telling me thus because only He could ensure that I saw this from two peoples ideas! Though I also thoroughly disapprove of deviation from the known Word of God I also believe that just like we are thrilled and hungry to know more about our Saviour and His relationship in the Trinity, so The mighty Jehovah thrills to give us , His true saints, knowledge opened from His incredible Word.
Praise to Jehovah in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen

    • The only way to G-D, Yahweh, is through Christ. Phanuel, Raphael, Gabriel and Michael are all Archangels created by Christ. Michael being the chief headstone, Hi, nice to meet you.

The problem we have isn’t so much of struggling with the truth of the Bible and Torah. The problem is that the “good” angels and humanity are being demonized and threatened by the Nephilim and Fallen Angels.

The truth is being exchanged for a lie. Deception is spoken over honesty.
Heresy is preferred by women instead of true love.
Schism is accepted instead of the law of Moses.
Denial of the Holy Trinity (Doectism) is commonly accepted and these people call themselves “Christians” and “Believers”.

Workers of the Vineyard need to re-read the whole gospel of Matthew to John. I sometimes just want people to be more sensitive, compassionate, loving and kind towards each other. I know there are a lot of words and law, if everyone loved perfectly, there would be no need for the law, but the truth is everyone breaks the law and they think it to be no big thing, they covet, divorce, covet, adultery, covet, divorce, covet, divorce, adultery, everyday is hump day and the “good” angels are standing around looking at all of humanity saying, “What the heck is this motley crue up to?”

It is evil and wicked people. This generation is seriously an adulterous and wicked generation. Get your head out of your butt and gutter.

      Psalm 91

      Michael

  11. Jesus Christ is Every Angel, otherwise he could not be “The Beloved One” He must hold Everything Good
There Are thousands upon thousands of Angels who are Gifted in certain things and they Honor and Support and Love us, willingly and Full Heartedly.
I am Every Angel in Revelations, revealed to me February 2010, I have walked the earth blind folded… If you think this to be untrue then pray, and ask The Almighty so, with sincere Heart, so you can know the truth, The Messiah is here, now where is he/she? Can you read The Signs of the times? Hitler was The reining anti-christ.
I am also The Justice of the Peace, Blind Folded, foot on the serpents head, sword of Revenge…
The world was made to revolve around The Living Christ.

  12. Hello
your site is awesome and has most interesting stuff about Bible ,GOD and endtimes. I have question ? If phanuel is Jesus then what about trinity? Does the Father ,Son and The Holy spirit are Three persons in one or anything else? The concept of trinity how it got originated and is it biblical.

    • dear Vinodh

It would not matter what name Jesus has used in the past, or what name he would use in the future. He would still be the same person. Just like if you or I were to change our names. We would still be the same people. “Jesus” (English) or “Yeshua” (Hebrew) was his earthly name.

The bible does not make clear what his name was before he came to earth from heaven, and it does mention that he will be known by another name when he returns.

Rev 3:12 Him that overcometh will I make a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go no more out: and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, [which is] new Jerusalem, which cometh down out of heaven from my God: and [I will write upon him] my new name.

We will also get new names:

Rev 2:17 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it].

In the bible, anyone from heaven who came to earth to visit man was called an “angel.” Sometimes, they were just called “men,” even though they were not human. You have to read the context to discover their mission and more about their identity.

For example, the bible (Genesis 18:1-2) said 3 “men” appeared to Abraham, but later, Abraham called one of them “Lord.” Then later in Genesis 19, it calls 2 of them “angels.” So, if Jesus appeared as a man or an angel, then he would be called this. Humans used the best terminology they could to explain the supernatural as it happened to them.

People should not be confused about “trinity.” The Father in heaven is God. Jesus is his spirit son, and so he is the son of God. They share the same divine nature and substance, just like you share the same human nature as your own father. But this does not make you to be your father.

Both the holy spirit and Jesus share the nature of the Father, the will of the Father, and the power of the father, because they are both part of him. The “oneness” they share is a unity.

But, as Jesus said, the Father is “boss,” and he and the holy spirit act under his direction. They follow his directions, obey him, and pray to him.

The common concept of the trinity comes from the Catholic church, and I do not agree with it completely. While Jesus is divine like his Father, Jesus made it clear that the Father was greater than he was, and he only came to do his father’s will on earth. The same is true of the holy spirit. So, while the catholic church makes all 3 “equal,” this would disagree with what Jesus said. The Father is “GOD,” just like there is only one king in a country. Jesus is comparable to the prince of the country. You do not say the prince is the king, but you do acknowledge that the prince is royalty.

However, once Jesus completed his mission on earth, the Father /God / King has exalted Jesus (prince)and given him all power to act in his name, so now Jesus is more powerful than he was before, which was already very much, since he had always been God’s (spirit) son. I make the note that he was the spirit son, because God does not need a wife to create children. He just speaks and it is created. Jesus had this son – father relationship with the Father / God / king before he came to earth, and now He sits on the right side of the throne in heaven, and will share in the judgement of mankind for their sins when the time comes.

      • What about John 10:30 “I and the father are one”? Doesn’t that mean they are the same/on the same level?

        • dear Waheed

No. It means that Jesus was one or united with the Father in spirit. In the same way we are one with Jesus in spirit, he is one with the Father in spirit.

It does not make everyone on the same level, although they all share the same spirit of life and truth by being united and in agreement.

If I am a believer in God, have his breath of life in me, obey him and honor him with my life, I am one with him in spirit. It does not make me God. It just makes me united with Him and accepted by Him.

      • Thank you for breaking this down. This was quite helpful to understand the relationship.

  13. Thank you Marianne for that quick reply.

  14. Marianne, you are absolutely correct.

The Holy Trinity is the Father(Yahweh), Son(Christ), Holy Spirit

Christ is the King of Kings and his Angels are the Princes.

Prince Michael, Prince Gabriel, Prince Raphael

    • thank you Michael. How do you know about Phanuel? and what did you mean with your comment about seeing rachel above in the comments?

are you saying that archangels are on earth now? I thought they remained in the heavenlies.

      • No, in fact angels were also known as “gods” little g. Archangels are the princes, yet Psalm 82 God said I say you are all gods, but you will die like men, you will fall like any number of the princes. The 200 that descended upon mt hermon and intermingled with women. Angels that taught alchemy and led men into sacrificing to demons. Sun worshipers/Samael worshipers. Again, Emmanuel/Jesus repeats this when the sanhedrin asking him if he was son of god/moshiac, he said did I not say ye are all gods. The Jews knew they were offspring of the fallen, therefore the “elect” but because they hid the way of salvation neither entering nor letting anyone else enter he came as messiah for the gentile. as well as the remnant of the Jews that would become engrafted. He came to the Jews first so they would be without excuse. Even now as they celebrate sukkot, they solidify they crucified Emmanuel when the water rights were performed. The parable of the lost sheep as well as the prodigals son. Jmo based on everything I have studied

      • Yes we are here

  15. Ok, nice subject. my name is actually phanuel but i spell it as Fanwell and i know it is the same name. am doing a study on the meaning of this name.

  16. Hello Marianne and All ,

I do’nt want to mix up topics but who is Melchizedek in the OT?
NT says that JESUS is anointed in the priestly order of Melchizedek who is the king of salem and to whom even Abraham gave a tenth .
Melchizedek neither has mother or father beginning or end !!!
Who is Mechizedek??????????? The bible gives very less information about him .

    • Vinnie
He was the higest Prest and Jesus can call him self the higest priest just like him. Mechizedek was not school teached priest bacuase their was not any scriptures then. The law came with Moses later. So Jesus can call him self high priest without going to school. Psalm 110 tells us that and the book Hebrews.

      • Thank You Istone for the insight .

But why so less described about Melchizedek and it is so intriguing about his whereabouts etc .

    • vinnie

We only know for sure what is written.

His name means king of righteousness.

So I assume he is either a very ancient figure, like Adam, or an angel messenger, or maybe Jesus in his pre-incarnate form.

  17. Guardian angels; Does everyone like guardian angels? Who is my Guardian angel? It depends on the day of the week you were born on
    1. St Gabriel-Monday
    2. St Jophiel-Tuesday
    3. St Raphael-Wednesday
    4. St Sealtiel-Thursday
    5. St Jehudiel-Friday
    6. St Zadkiel-Saturday
    7. St Michael-Sunday

  18. Whew! You got a ton of comments here already, but I just wanted to throw out there that there might be a connection to the town “Penuel” which I believe is also the place where Jacob wrestled with the angel. I’m very interested in this whole story, thank you for writing this!

  19. In the Testament of the 12 Patriarchs, Dan’s warning to his children are to stay close to his interceeding angel and the savior of the gentiles. In the end they would cling to the savior of the gentiles in order to obtain salvation. It may seem that Phanuel is this interceeding angel while the Son of Humanity is Emmanuel (God with us).

His name shall be called Emmanuel, yet they changed his name as a corruptive adaptation. I enjoy reading others experiences with apocryphal works. I enjoy Enoch, Epistles of Barnabas, Nag Hammadi scriptures. ..beautiful to learn the truths that were hidden

  20. In Zec.3.1 it appears the confrontation between Joshua and the satan represents the contention between the Jews who were trying to rebuild the Temple and the local chieftains who tried to halt the construction. Refer to Ezra 4.

  21. So how does Hebrew 1 play out in this😍 theory?

    • it is consistent with hebrew 1.. there is a FAther God, and a Son of God…who has been revealed in different ways over the ages.

1 God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets,

      2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;

3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high:

4 Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

5 For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?

6 And again, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.

7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.

8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.

9 Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.

10 And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:

      11 They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;

12 And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.

13 But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?

14 Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?

      • ps the Son is not an angel, but from man’s perspective in the OT, that is how he was perceived.

      • I see the clear distinction being made between the Son and the angels. Is that a misinterpretation on my part?

        • in the hebrew mindset, any visiting “stranger” from heaven was an angel…they did not know that God had a Son….that was revealed later.

recall the 3 strangers, angels, who visited Abraham….he called one of them Lord….

jacob wrestled with an “angel,” then later said he had met god….

recall the extra man in the furnace with the 3 hebrews…..he was thought of as an angel…but even the king said he was like the son of god…..

Sampson’s parents were visited by an angel about their son’s birth, then later said they had met god.

so people were getting clues….they just did not have strong confirmation yet.

there were angels who were angels…then sometimes there was one Angel who seemed more than the others, where they felt they had met god instead.

          Preexistence of the Chosen One

there were the angels, angels of the Lord, and then THE Angel of the Lord.

  22. […] Angel Phanuel – the “face of God” […]

  23. Peniel, a Hebrew form of Phanuel, is who Jacob wrestles with and called “face of god” and who changes his name to Israel. This is also when Rachel dies giving birth to Benjamin. Rachel means “ewe” …now remember when Abel sacrifices a lamb and see if you can connect the dots.

    • Colossians 1:15

      • The ewe is a reference to the matriarchal societies that proceeded the patriarchal takeover around 6000 years ago. Hence the OT admonitions to destroy any signs of goddess worship. Gods only. Now think of the nursery rhyme, “Mary had a little lamb” … Study the precession of the equinox. Each star sign has a period of time – an age – aprox 220-2600 years long. (I will be with you until the end of the age (not time, read the original Greek word)). The bible starts with a very brief overview of the star signs from Virgo/Leo (sphinx) through Gemini. Then in Gen 2, it changes to Taurus the Bull which covers most of Abe, Jake, et al, until the Exodus where the Bull is no more – hence the anger over the golden calf, and the new age is of the Ram (Aries/Mars) the god of war following a fairly peaceful time in Egypt. You will find many allusions to war, battle, genocide, etc, through out the OT. When Jesus comes, the “lamb/ram” is killed and the new age of the fish, Pisces begins. And he says, I will be with you until the end of the age. Remember the dove that hovers over his head? Symbol of Semiramas, as is the fish. She was a queen of Babylon who rescued her son Tammuz from the underworld and then later married him when her husband died making him king. (another interpretation of my father and I are one). She is also credited with inventing the chastity belt and castration of wayward young men. Book of Revelation is – to me – the Warlike Ram trying to get back his place using the Age of Aquarius. Note how it is a ‘book’ with lots of death, destruction, and war. The rest of the Gospel, 26 books, is mostly about love, peace and brotherhood. Originally, the first sign of the zodiac was Virgo, the Virgin. Later, it became Aries the Ram, probably when the patriarchy changed it. So when the verse says, “the first shall be last and the last shall be first” it may be alluding to the Ram being the first sign and getting to be the last again. However …. the precession doesn’t work that way. The next sign is Aquarius.

You might also find interesting that Jacob predicted that while Judah would hold the scepter for a time, that scepter would change hands when “Shiloh comes” … Exodus is about Moses, a Levite, and Judah and Dan as the main players – Leah’s boys. The NT brings things back to Rachel’s boys, Joe and Ben. Jesus advises that his followers will have the capability to “crush serpents and scorpions” – an allusion to Dan, and then he also refers to “wolves in sheep’s clothing” … this is an allusion to Benjamin whose standard is the wolf. This is also reflected in Joe putting the silver cup in Ben’s sack so he is thought of as a thief, the numbers 5 and 3 that show up in the loaves and fishes is an echo of when the brothers are united in Egypt and Ben is given five times and three times more food and drink. In Psalm 91, there is also a reference to lions – Dan and Judah. Oddly, this is left out of the current version of NT. Think on that one awhile.

Take some time and study the very peaceful EQUALITARIAN cultures that Columbus and his rogues decimated, “in the Name of God”. Or the Native Americans of this country. What throughout history has been called ‘heathen’ ‘backwards’ or ‘barbarian’ was often quite the opposite.

Not saying I know anything here … just giving some food for thought. I am a patternist. I see patterns in the Bible and follow them.

  24. I think jesus has other names.n at the time of enoch he only knew of works as an angel phanuel bcus he didnt know of jesus name only knew of his destiny thats y he spoke of thr chosen one.👍

  25. Isaiah 63:9 we read, “In all their trouble He was troubled; then the Angel of His Presence saved them; in His love and pity He redeemed them…”

“The Angel of His Presence” could be transliterated as “the Angel of His Face.” Also consider…..

2 Corinthians 4:6, “For G-D, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give us the Light of the knowledge of the glory and majesty of G-D in the face of Jesus Christ”

It seems Christ is The Angel of the L-RD, but wether or not his name is Phanuel is still of interest to me.

  26. Could Panuel name being changed to Mannuel during translation or? Mashiach was an angel, an angel who was set higher after he had risen. all angels are son of the Almighty, Ehyeh. Thanks for sharing

    • khim

I think those are two different names. one means the face of god, and the other means god is with us.

however, if the name was mistranslated that would explain a lot.

  27. First created angel -Word Phanuel is not the Word.

  28. Oh Phanuel is here, even now. Right now.

  29. From what I understand so far, Phanuel is a separate entity as he is one of the 4 Princes. I say this because angels act as assistants to the ministry of Jesus, the sustaining of natural forces (weather, planetary orbit, animals, etc.), and the execution of God’s judgements. Phanuel may minister to the repentant but he is not the ORIGIN of the cleansing and forgiveness–that comes from the Blood of Jesus. I think Phanuel simply assists in conveying it like how a nurse helps administer the medicine from the doctor–the nurse is a healer too but acts at the direction of the Great Doctor. That is how I understand angels to work.

Jesus is Jesus, King of Kings. Always has and will be. He just likes working together with angels and his saints–he could do it all himself but he likes sharing tasks and missions with us so we can share in the joy and glory. God likes to share. Once you understand that, it’s not hard to understand how Christ labors together with angels.

I actually just asked Jesus to send Phanuel to minister repentance to my family together with holy spirit. I felt a surge of joy in doing so,
