Fire Is Not Quenched

This concept is repeated in both Isaiah and by Jesus/Yahshua.

Gehenna

Isaiah

Isaiah describes a fate where the corpse /dead body, killed by the Lord, which would attract maggots or worms, is subjected to a fire that never dies.

This could either mean that the dead bodies are so many that the fire burns continuously, or that the corpse is not destroyed, but burns continuously.

Isaiah 66:24

“And they shall go forth and look
Upon the corpses of the men
Who have transgressed against Me.
For their worm does not die,
And their fire is not quenched.

They shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

These are not berries. They are worms, rounded up, as head joins tail.

The word for worm above refers to a specific kind, that is used for its scarlet dye in temple garments and fabrics.

Worm (H8438):

The KJV translates Strong’s H8438 in the following manner: scarlet (34x), worm (8x), crimson (1x).

Outline of Biblical Usage [?]

worm, scarlet stuff, crimson

worm – the female ‘coccus ilicis’

scarlet stuff, crimson, scarlet

the dye made from the dried body of the female of the worm

        “coccus ilicis”

worm, maggot

worm, grub

the worm “coccus ilicis”

Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit.

It is our responsibility to keep ourselves pure and holy.

Jesus Warns of Offenses – repeats Isaiah 5 x

He uses the imagery of a lowly worm to compare to the human body and soul, that suffers unceasingly in hell.

Here, he is talking about the sin of child abuse:

Mark 9:

42 “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea.

43 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter into life maimed, rather than having two hands, to go to hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched

44 where

Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched
.’

45 And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off. It is better for you to enter life lame, rather than having two feet, to be cast into hell, into the fire that shall never be quenched

46 where

Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched
.’

47 And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out. It is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire—

48 where

Their worm does not die
And the fire is not quenched
.’

Why does he repeat this concept 5 X?

Hell, and the endless suffering of the “worm,” must be important.

Jesus / Yahshua seems to think hell is important enough to mention it 5 x in one conversation.

Most people rarely give it any thought at all.

This might be a hint from the Lord that we should keep this concept constantly in our minds, or at least daily.

This is our future, if we sin, and do not repent.

Hell is not a joke.

The suffering is endless.

I encourage all who have not repented of their sins, and accepted Jesus / Yahshua’s atonement on the cross, to do so quickly, and with great care.

  1. […] here for […]

  2. I believe the word “worm” here refers spiritually to our nervous system and the ability to feel pain – this is a part of our soul which survives death. Additionally, the soul has the ability to feel emotions, and contains the mind.

A physical worm doesn’t have a mind or feel emotions, but can feel pain.

Normally, the “worm” would be consumed in eternal fire, since the entire soul can die (Eze 18:20) but for purposes of punishment (for special people with extraordinary sin) the worm is permitted to continue to live and feel pain endlessly.

interesting view. that worm = nervous system. there is a verse about the body and soul in hell.

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. matt 10:28

so maybe the whole body can end up there.

  3. A lot of people have to answer to Jesus even if they call themselves Christians. I have seen so called Christians gossip and treat other people who are less fortunate then themselves for self gain. As far as I am concerned they are Religious people not Christians. There is a lot of religious worms on the Earth and they will be going to the fire of hell.

  4. 7~13~2019 Sabbath

Marianne, interesting concepts! I have learned that those cast into “The Lake of Fire” do not burn forever but for some it will seem like it. Because they are not saved from their sins by faith in Yahshua, the Lamb of Yahweh, they must pay for their own sins. They burn until consumed but NOT forever. The “Ever Burning Hell” is ANOTHER LIE put out by the Vatican’s Christianity. The TRUE Hebrew meaning has been purposely lost. Like just about everything TRUE about Yahshua the Messiah. These include His Name, date of birth, date of death, and the day that He arose (on the Sabbath!)

I think there are 2 locations of fire: hell / gehenna and the lake of fire…

.in ONE of them the worm does not die and the fire is unquenched. if this is the correct understanding, then the worm or body, burns eternally.

but then here below, it seems like the body burns until destroyed

Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell. matt 10:28
