Honoring the American military
Outside of Christ Himself, it is the humble soldier who gives his life for his country, and the righteousness of God, that we should hold up as our greatest hero. Freedom comes with self sacrifice, not self entitlement.
We hear so much negative talk about how terrible America is, how sinful it is, how God will send it to its doom, yet we ignore all the good that is done by the righteous.
This is to honor all those, in all branches of service, who have served their country and fellow man in different ways:
It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.
It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.
It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.
It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.
It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.
It is the VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.
It is the VETERAN, who salutes the Flag,
It is the VETERAN, who serves under the Flag,
ETERNAL REST GRANT THEM O LORD, AND LET PERPETUAL LIGHT SHINE UPON THEM.
We can be very proud of our young men and women in the service no matter where they serve.
This also includes those who have to operate in secret, and receive no public recognition for their sacrifices.
God, the American military, and all protective services, have made the highest sacrifices for our nation.

You have a father to be proud of. My father was a veteran also, in several wars. Oddly enough, like your dad, he dodged all the bullets, and also got sick in his 50’s.
There are those that talk negatively about America, but she is always there to bail out their sorry butts.
My father was in the Philippines in WWII, it was terrible. Each generation has their battles for freedom and we must teach the past, protect the present, and prepare for the future.
As a retired disabled veteran, and husband of a wife who is also a veteran, I would like to say thanks to all of you. The cold nights staring over the wall, peering into the eyes of Russian troops made me think of home and I felt a deep love for God and country.

And my objection is not for America only but for any country.
The soldier does as he is commanded no matter who he works for….

Soldiers, law officers, mercenaries, etc. all do not bear the sword in vain.
They are paid to do a job. And they do it.

You said the above. These dedicated young men were not ‘commanded’ to join to protect our freedoms. Some are already home, and have children. Many say, like my grandson, he would go back if called. He has paid a very big price, with very little pay. You are dihororing our young and old men and women who go to fight for our country.

I pray God blesses all our young men coming home and having to adjust to civilian life.

A soldier is called a soldier after he/she signed in. Whether that is done voluntarily or not.
After that he is called a soldier and does exactly as he is commanded.
My ancestors fought as well.

Jesus also appeared in the old testament to aid the Israeli army at Jericho. He came as the Angel of the Lord, supervising the battle.

Read a good Bible commentary, and we will find that “Thou shall not kill” would better be translated, “Thou shall not murder.” God Himself sent men to war, and war causes death. There are right reasons to fight wars, and wrong ones. DavWms

Any commentary on the laws Of God, is just a commentary by man, and the Law Of The Lord Stands Firm.
The Lord fought with His Strong Arm and defeated the enemies of Israel, therefore His enemies.
Under The Command of The Lord Jericho fell to The Hands of The Lord.
He that lives by the sword shall die by the sword.
That holds true for Russia, for U.S. for North Korea and any of the countries that in their hearts do not believe that there is a God.
There are no reasons for war other than the greed of man.
And The Lord does not contradict Himself.
There is a Sword that comes out of The Mouth of The Living God that will put an end to this.
And then Judgment.
Do you think in your heart that when The Lord says ‘Thou shall NOT kill’ that He didn’t mean it???

Abigail, have you quoted some Scriptures while forgetting others? Yes, in the end, it was God’s hand that destroyed the enemies. But He used men to kill the enemy in most cases. Not all the battles they fought were as Jericho, or when God sent an angel to kill thousands. In the war God sent Saul in to fight Amelek, He even ordered that the women and babies were to be killed. Read 1Sam15 for that. Note that when Saul did not obey that command completely, God took His grace off him.
Nor do I choose to listen only to Bible scholars for my info. I read them to see if they might see something that got past me. I try to see the Word from every angle, knowing it is all too easy to miss truth. DavWms

Joshua was out surveying city of Jericho and planning his battle strategy. How would he take this fortified city?

I come from a very long line of Family Veterans and I was taught that it was not only my obligation but an Honor to serve in the Military! I personally consider the Men and Women of the American Military the real Heroes! I almost go crazy when someone calls a multimillion dollar sports person a hero!
People who dive into the icy river to save another person life, is a Hero!
Those who helped others to safety on 911 are Heroes. Many were helping others down the smoke filled stairwell when the towers collapsed, they are Heroes!
People want to destroy the USA because we are the greatest country in the world! Also as I posted on another thread, satan knows that he can not defeat a great Christian Nation!
Our country is being destroyed from within and as I said before, the United States will fall in to the hands of the morally corrupt! We Christians my be killed physically, but we will not be killed spiritually!

btw, when I enlisted in the Army I made $49.00 per/month in Boot camp, after 3 month my pay was raised to $79.00 per month!!

When I heard that they had to pay for their uniforms I was shocked beyond belief!

You asked if ‘God sent men’ (plurial) to kill Amelek.
Amalek had ambushed Israel and had actually blocked Israel’s only escape route.
The Lord ordered His anointed man, Saul to destroy that group.
The men under Saul obeyed the King, but the King did not obey The Lord.
So the direct answer to your question is no.
The Lord ordered one man under Him, that is Saul.
Saul spared the life of Agag and the best of all things.
And to Saul’s own judgement he only destroyed what he deemed worthless.
God commanded the man He had anointed with His own Spirit.
One man David only one man.
A King who would not obey The Lord.
Reminds me of Lucifer, the angel who exalted himself in his pride above the ordinances of God.
No one is above The Lord and no one is above The master and no one is above The Law of God.
And this is the Truth.

I went to a Memorial service yesterday for the very first time. My dad was a Paratropper in the Army in WWII and my mom a Wave in the Navy in WWII. He’s never invited me soI invited myself. I saw a movie last year on MacArthur starring Gregory Peck and I felt moved to attend a servie and it was too late, so I made sure to attend a service this year and I hope to do it in the future and take my daughter. It was a very moving service yesterday. When the gulf war was going on in 1991 I went to four parades: El Toro, San Clemente, Fullerton and Hollywood. I have volunteered with Sar-El in 1992,1993,1994 and 1995 as a Christian witeness with the only Christian group Israel allows to go once a year in the springtime. Abigail, do you have a teachable spirit? Are you able to admit a wrong concept of the Bible if it is proven to you? I think you are defending your own doctrine, not a Bible doctrine.
For example, take the word “kill” in the Commandment, “Thou shalt not kill.” The Hebrew translation of that word is, “Ratsach.” It means “murder a human.” You can look this up for yourself.
You kept trying to explain “why” people did obey God and kill people, instead of just admitting, “yes, God did send men to kill enemies.” If I did not already know why, I would not have mentioned that verse. I could have mentioned many other verses where God sent His people to kill Israel’s enemies. But it appears you would have tried to explain them away too, to defend your own doctrine.
I have done all I know to try to help you see the error of your doctrine, but to no avail. I can only hope that it planted seeds for you to search for the truth before erroniously quoting God’s Word. ..DavWms

From the blue letter bible, here are two verses both spoken by Jesus and both in the same gospel of Mathew which clearly points out that the verb ‘to murder’ and
‘to kill’ are exactly the same thing.
Mat 19:18
He saith unto him, Which? Jesus said, Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness,

Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not kill; and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judgment:
And here I also would like to point out to you that the 9th commandment of The Lord says:
‘ Thou shall not bear false witness against thy neighbor.’
I have not quoted erroneously The Holy Word of God.
And I have not attacked you personally.
The Spirit that dwells in me, is given me by God.
My doctrine is the pure word of The Lord.
And Him I will and must defend, BECAUSE He is Truth.

Abigail, You asked what is my point? You made my point, again. Before you quoted Jesus’ word, “kill’ above, you should have looked up the Greek word from which it was translated. It was, “phoneuo,” which means “to murder.” If you think you have a Bible translation that properly conveys the meaning of words every time, then you have the only perfectly translated Bible in the world.
We are to study to show ourselves approved. To me, that means I must also know the original meanings of Bible words before I try to quote them to prove a point. You would do well to use an exhaustive Bible concordance and/or a Bible dictionary so you can see the original meanings of Bible words.
For me, this is the last I want to say on this to you. It has gone on long enuf without a unified conclusion. You can continue, if you want the last word. I thank God, Marianne, and our military for giving you that privelege… DavWms

And that is my point.
Yes there must be wars and many tears, and The Lord says that him who endures till the end the same shall be saved.
The true Christian is not to raise the sword and cut anyone’s ear off.
Much less engage in wars.
And so although I understand the grief and the anger suffered as results of war,
still we must obey The Lord and stand blameless before Him.

Well, though I am glad that Hitler is no more, I find this glorification of armed forces unwarranted.
There are many reasons why someone joins the armed forces but the virtues have been achieved a long time ago. In these days the American soldier is misused to correct or curb problems the own country has created or caused by gross neglect.
The American soldier is paying with life and health for the business of the military complex and for the dishonest conduct of its political leaders.
I find it outrageous to compare Israel and Joshua with the USA.
Who told you to start a war under false pretense? Did God lie to Joshua to get him to conquer Canaan? I see no justification whatsoever in this whole war against terror and as for being free that was a long time ago. The average American has not realized how little of the once great freedom is still left.

Sorry you feel that way. Contrary to popular slander and propaganda, we have done good in Iraq and elsewhere. WE have rebuilt cities, orphanages, schools, feed the poor, and taken nothing in return. We have defended the defenseless.
The problem is that we had to do it alone, that cowardly nations backed out when threatened by terrorists, and countries like France, Germany, and Russia were more interested in oil contracts than seeing innocent massacred Iraqis helped against a brutal dictator.
Without enough help, the Americans had to contend with insurgents who were able to invade the country and start a civil war.
So, before you condemn America, and fall for the slander, look at your own country, and see the evil there.
Marianne, I do agree that the armed forces have protected the USA very well so far. However, I doubt that you have an accurate appraisal of the situation abroad. There are certainly soldiers with a human heart who want to do the best in a difficult situation. But the damage the US forces have caused in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan and untold more countries, is huge. There was no reason in the first place to invade Afghanistan or Iraq. There is no merit when you repair what you have destroyed. It is unknown how many Iraqis have died a miserable death due to the politics of the USA. Defend the defenseless? I doubt those killed nearly every day by reckless military operations agree on that. Saddam Hussein could never cause nearly as many deaths as the US lead coalition has. Another ruthless organization is the CIA, also known as criminals in action. How often have they manipulated the affairs of another country to alter situations to their liking. Again, if the whole truth of past and future plans of the ruling elite were known, you would have an immediate civil war at your hand.
Surely, Germany has its own evils but to point to here does not make things of the USA better.

Our American military is one of the most decent in the world. The Americans even go in after a war or conflict, and help the defeated nation. WE give out more financial aid, and medical help, than anyone. That is more than other countries can say about themselves. The Israelis do the same thing.

Try to keep this in focus. The military we have do an honorable job. Many times they are opposed to what the President says. This was true during the Clinton administration, and is true now under Obama.
The soldiers who have gone to Iraq have done everything they could to help protect the people there. They were not there massacring people, as the media and propaganda says.
These rumors were started by the terrorists themselves, and the godless portion of our government.
But not all of our government is godless.
It is a battle now between good and evil in this country.
The Homeland Security has labeled people who are patriotic, Christians, or a soldier returning from war as potential terrorists.
How could the military agree with this? They are being falsely accused by godless people who have never risked their lives to serve their country. The military is right in their assessment of the war on terrorism. The President does not always follow good advice.
I totally support going to Iraq.
We are fighting terrorists, and they are all connected to each other. What was wrong with Iraq is that many nations backed out and put all the burden on the USA.
Sadaam Hussein was a butcher who was murdering his own people, and he DID have weapons of mass destruction. But germany, france and russia pushed for a 6 month delay in the war, giving sadaam plenty of time to move them to Syria. So when we could not find them, we were condemned. The UN, other countries and the USA all had proof for the 10 years before the war that Sadaam had the WMDs. But now the proof was hidden, and the slander started.
But discussing what evil exists in government now is really pointless. This was all prophesied in the bible. The world will grow cold and evil in the last days. It is Satan’s final hour.
All we can do now is keep our eyes on Jesus, and hope for his soon return.
We need to stay in the Word of God and stay close to God’s heart, and not let this preoccupation with the evil in the world consume us.
In fact, the worse the world gets, the more detached we should be. We cannot be part of this world anymore.
