Locusts and scorpions in end time prophecy
Is God really talking about insects?
When looking at both old and New Testament scriptures, we see a symbolic definition of the word, that they can be more than insects.
(1) Eze 2:6 And thou, son of man, be not afraid of them, neither be afraid of their words, though briers and thorns [be] with thee, and thou dost dwell among scorpions: be not afraid of their words, nor be dismayed at their looks, though they [be] a rebellious house.
** scorpions here indicate wicked people who speak wicked words and are rebellious. These are real enemies of God’s people.
*** note: in Hebrew, the word is Aqrab, or Akrab, which is where the word Arab comes from in English.
(2) Luk 10:19 Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you.
** Here, we see that we have power over these enemies. Jesus did not come to earth, so that people could tread on insects.
(3) Rev 9:3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
** here, locusts and scorpions are presented as similar forces. They represent similar punishments.
(4). Rev 9:7 And the shapes of the locusts [were] like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads [were] as it were crowns like gold, and their faces [were] as the faces of men.
*** Here, the locusts had crowns of gold. Who did this represent? This reminds us of
(5) Nah 3:17 Thy crowned [are] as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, [but] when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they [are].
So who is Nahum talking to? If we look earlier, he is speaking to Nineveh
Nah 3:7 And it shall come to pass, [that] all they that look upon thee shall flee from thee, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will bemoan her? whence shall I seek comforters for thee?
Why is Nahum speaking this way about Nineveh?
Nah 3:1 Woe to the bloody city! it [is] all full of lies [and] robbery; the prey departs not;
Nah 3:4 Because of the multitude of the whoredoms of the wellfavoured harlot, the mistress of witchcrafts, that sells nations through her whoredoms, and families through her witchcrafts.
** The reason: the city (representing a people) is a bloody harlot. Who does the city Nineveh represent? It represents Assyria, which is now modern day Iraq. The ancient city is near the modern city of Mosul. The bloody harlot in Revelation seems to be the woman she has always been.
(6) Rev 9:8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as [the teeth] of lions.
Rev 9:9 And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings [was] as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
Rev 9:10 And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power [was] to hurt men five months.
** Here, the locusts have faces of men, and the tails are like scorpions, so now the 2 insect types are part of one kind of beast. Since they also have faces of men, it is a clue, once again, that these are human enemies, or demonic beings, or a mixture of the two. Note that they have teeth as lions and have wings. This is the symbol of Nineveh:
The map below compares the range of the desert locust to the area occupied by the Saracen Empire. Note the close similarity.
Here is the current brief on locusts for 2008:
So, what might be application of this ancient symbolism to end time prophecy?
The world has become evil. Following God’s usual pattern of removing his protection, and sending in godless enemies to destroy the unfaithful and wicked, I believe he will do it once again. First He sends in the godless and evil enemies to humiliate and destroy the unfaithful and equally godless, then He destroys the original enemies He sent in by another evil force. This is a pattern repeated throughout the entire history of the Old Testament, and is seen in how God has always judged the ancient lands.
So who will he send? I believe that these earlier references and later references are referring to the same group of ancient enemies of Israel, which have now become the modern enemies of the entire world.
I believe that the above locust-scorpion beasts are the representation of the last Beast (kingdom) to conquer and terrorize the world. I believe that God will use the Islamic terrorists from this region, who really are like scorpions and locusts, to punish the world for its sins.
Then, when God has finished using the terrorists for his judgment on the earth, he will destroy them also. To destroy the terrorists (scorpion-locusts), He allows the unleashing of demonic forces on the entire Middle East in

But what is the end of all this study?
The purpose, as always, is to have you think of your future. You will have to deal with the reality of the end times very soon. Where are you in your walk with God?
Do you not realize there is only one way to be saved from this horror that is about to begin? Nuclear warfare is coming. Over half the earth will be destroyed. It has already started. It will not get better with politicians, or government funding, by raising prices and your taxes. It is already out of control. It is only going to get worse.
Mohammed will not save you. Neither will Buddha. There is only one person in existence, whose name you will be able to call upon, when the wrath of God hits. His name is Jesus.
Your focus should not be on your job, or wealth management, or chasing prosperity, because it will all be for nothing. You should be on your knees, asking God to help save you and your children. When the signs are there for a major disaster or storm, don’t you prepare? Why are you waiting to do anything? Do you really think you have that much time? Do not be fooled. If you think you can plan your day of salvation, you are stupid.
Take time now. Be honest. Repent of your sins, and ask God for forgiveness. It may be the last chance you have.
You could die tonight. So what then? It will be too late for you.
