Trumpets are usually associated with the Feast of Trumpets, or the 7 Trumpets of Judgment in Revelation.
Also, the “last trump” is predicted, but when is the first trump?
A trumpet was also heard at Sinai, on Pentecost, after the Hebrews were told to prepare for 2 days. Would this be the first trump we will hear?
** There will always be other interpretations of the last trump. Some say it is the last of the 7 trumpets of judgment. But that would be another post.
At Mt. Sinai, God gave the 10 commandments to the Hebrew people. Since it occurred 50 days after the Passover, it is also called Pentecost.
God’s sequence of events:
2 days of preparation:
Exd 19:10 ¶ And the LORD said unto Moses, Go unto the people, and sanctify them to day and to morrow, and let them wash their clothes,
Exd 19:11 And be ready against the third day: for the third day the LORD will come down in the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai.
Thunder lightnings, fire, smoke, on the third day
Exd 19:16 ¶ And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that [was] in the camp trembled.
Exd 19:18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.
The long sound of the voice of the trumpet- the trumpet is God’s voice
Exd 19:19 And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice.
Exd 20:18 ¶ And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw [it], they removed, and stood afar off.
There is a similarity between the events at Sinai and what is described for the end times in the New Testament.
This is why I think the Sinai “trumpet” could be our final signal to prepare for the tribulation.
The earth shakes, as it did at Sinai and Calvary, and there is a voice of the trumpet.
1. At the crucifixion:
Mat 27:51 Just then the temple curtain was torn in two, from top to bottom. The earth shook and the rocks were split apart.
Heb 12:26 Then his voice shook the earth, but now he has promised, “I will once more shake not only the earth but heaven too.”
2. For the last days:
Rev 1:10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s Day when I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet
Rev 4:1 After these things I looked, and there was a door standing open in heaven! And the first voice I had heard speaking to me like a trumpet said: “Come up here so that I can show you what must happen after these things.”
I Cor 15:52 in a moment, in the blinking of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
Rev 11:13 Just then a major earthquake took place and a tenth of the city collapsed; seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
The First Trump – to prepare and purify
From the story at Sinai, there was a “2 day” preparation and purification for the encounter with God.
On the third day, there was a long blast of the trumpet, on the day of Pentecost.
It is possible that the first trump in the last days will sound when the saints are given the signal that they have only 2 years (“2 days”) left to prepare for the tribulation.
Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he reveals his secret unto his servants the prophets.
The Lord is merciful – to give a final warning to prepare, and an encouragement that He is really coming back to help us.
The question is who will hear it?
Only those who are His sheep, and are actually listening.
It is possible to be one of God’s own, and not be paying attention at all. So these people would be unprepared.
The last trump – resurrection of the dead, and the meeting in the air
Many feel that the Lord will return at the Feast of Trumpets, at the last trumpet, but how does the feast of Shavuot (Pentecost) tie in with this?
Rosh Hashanah (Feast of Trumpets) occurs on the first and second days of Tishri.
The name “Rosh Hashanah” is not used in the Bible to discuss this holiday.
The Bible refers to the holiday as Yom Ha-Zikkaron (the day of remembrance) or Yom Teruah (the day of the sounding of the shofar).
The holiday is instituted in Leviticus 23:24-25.
The last trump is mentioned in Corinthians.
1Cr 15:52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed.
Tribulation may begin at Passover time?
For the bible to mention the last trump as the signal for the resurrection of the dead, and the meeting of the saints in the air with Jesus, implies that there was also a “first trump” earlier.
When would we hear this first trump?
First I assumed that the first trumpet would be on the first day, and the last trumpet would fall on the second (last) day of the Feast of Trumpets, since they sound the shofar for 2 days.
But the more I think of it, the first trumpet could also be sounded on the feast of Shavuot (Pentecost), and then the last Trumpet should be heard several years later on the second day of Yom Teruah (Feast of Trumpets).
Remember, Pentecost is 50 days (or almost 2 months after Passover).
There are 84 days (12 weeks) between Shavuot (Pentecost) and Yom Teruah (Feast of Trumpets). This is 4 months. The other 3 years consists of the time between the first day of Trumpets and the final appearance of Messiah.
Putting this all together:
I think the first trump will sound, or has sounded, to signal that there is a 2 year (“2 day”) preparation period for the tribulation to come.
I think the tribulation might start right at Passover, as the antichrist stops the Passover sacrifice in the temple, and places himself there as a point of worship instead.
If this is correct, then the time frame would look like this:
** 1260 days = 50 + 4 months + 3 years + 10 days
There is also the viewpoint that the last trump occurs before the tribulation, instead at the end of it. I am not presenting that view here.
There is a different theory I have about what sacrifice is stopped at this time, and if there is a complete temple. For this see here:
So, what do you think?
Will there be a warning trumpet before the Tribulation begins?
Or has it sounded already?
