Speaking in Tongues – the Science and the Spirit

fire_in_mozambique2

While many Christian denominations deny the experience, scientists have already accepted it, and are doing brain scans, showing results. But is what they find a mental change, spiritual change, or both? Can the spirit produce a physical change?

The Bible says that we must renew our mind. The minimum requirements are to reject sin, repent, and accept the salvation offered by Christ. This level of interpretation has to do with changing our thoughts and behavior, in line with God’s standards of righteousness.

But can thought changes produce physical changes? Will a renewing of the mind renew the body?

Previous posts have asked what is different about our physical bodies from heavenly bodies, or those of fallen angels.

Now I ask what is different about the spiritual (with God) man’s body, from the natural (against God) man’s body?

It starts in the mind, but does it end there? The brain affects the rest of the body.

I also ask, if true, that the spiritual man actually has different brain chemistry, which would then produce a different physiology, then is he closer to the physical, more glorified condition that Adam was in, in the Garden of Eden?

Scientists have done brain scans on those speaking in tongues, and find chemical changes. They find this is believable, even when some Christians do not. This is a strange twist of circumstances, since usually science will try to oppose religion, and here, there are some scientists that believe more than some Christians do.

Brain scans of those speaking in tongues

Glossolalia and Temperature Change in the Right and Left Cerebral Hemispheres

The neuroscience of speaking in tongues:

The New York Times has covered a recently published brain-scanning study of five individuals who ‘speak in tongues’ – an experience also known as glossolalia – where someone appears to be speaking in an incomprehensible language over which they seem to have no control.

This is usually linked to religious and spiritual worship, particularly for Christians in the charismatic tradition. A team of researchers, led by Dr Andrew Newberg, used a type of brain-imaging called SPECT to compare blood flow differences in the brain between when participants were singing hymns and when they were speaking in tongues.

The main findings were that when participants were speaking in tongues compared to when they were singing, there was a decrease in activity in the prefrontal cortex, the tip of the left temporal lobe and a deep brain structure called the caudate nucleus.

Although brain areas are known to have multiple functions, the prefrontal cortex is known to be involved in cognitive control, while the left temporal pole is associated with naming and the caudate nucleus has been associated with the ability to switch between multiple languages.

The authors suggest that these findings may indicate a loosening of control over language functions in the brain, potentially leading to the production of apparently unstructured language that the participants experience as outside their control.

*** note: Is it possible that Adam, in the Garden of Eden, could speak unstructured, multiple languages?

And maybe his brain, more in tune with God, actually allowed for a flow of unlimited languages directed by God, rather than a disconnected brain, limited speech, based on his own earthly abilities?

Notably, there were also relative increases in activity in the left parietal lobe (linked to our sense of body and spatial awareness) and the amygdala – an area known to be heavily involved in emotion.

However, this is not the first time that neuroscientists have studied speaking in tongues.

Dr Michael Persinger reported a case in 1984 where he used EEG recordings to look at the electrical activity in the brain of a 20 year-old female who experienced the same phenomenon.

spike-events-during-glossalalia1The graph on the left shows EEG recordings taken from the temporal lobes during a period of speaking in tongues that show increased ‘spike events’.

This indicates that, like the more recent Newberg study, changes in temporal lobe function may be an important part of the experience.

Glossolalia vs meditation

http://www.vxm.com/NLPVitaliano.html

Delta spikes occurred within the temporal lobe during protracted intermittent episodes of glossolalia (speaking in tongues) by a member of a Pentecostal sect. There are other reports of delta activity during TM practices (Stigsby et al. 1981, Pagano et al, 1976), but these delta waves were mostly reported to be associated with stages of deep sleep.

*** interesting note: speaking in tongues produced the same results as those in deep relaxation, or deep sleep.

So tongue speaking is not due to increased mental effort. It is due to relaxing the mind.

Science begins to make room for spirituality

http://pewforum.org/events/?EventID=185

Over the last some number of years, this hardcore materialism (in science) has eroded. It’s getting more open to spirituality. There are ideas that come out of the field, which leave room for spirituality, and also explain it.

One is the plasticity of the brain, the incredible adaptiveness, the fire-together, wire-together idea that we’re not hardcore driven by material things, that we’re wired to adapt to environment and that the nature-nurture distinction is a bogus one, and that therefore, this plasticity makes it a less material, less predetermined organ.

Second, again, is the power of the unconscious, the power of things that happen below reason and rational awareness

Summary of scientific findings

1. Tongues does produce measurable changes in brain activity and blood flow in the brain.

2. Certain part of the brain experience decreased activity- those that reflect conscious (cognitive) control, structured language, and learning and memory.

What this means is that the mind is

a. not controlling the tongues,

b. language become unstructured and something the person is NOT familiar with

c. real tongues is NOT a learned, or remembered, manifestation.

3. Speaking in tongues is not due to increased mental effort. It is equated with deep sleep or deep relaxation.

4. There are spike events with Tongues, showing momentary decreased blood flow. Spikes are also found in epilepsy, but at a more intense level.

Before one becomes concerned that tongues is harmful, one needs to understand what epilepsy is, and how the EEG (brain electrical activity) is different from tongues.

Epilepsy reflects abnormal, excessive or synchronous neuronal activity in the brain. This means that during the disease state, excess neurons are firing in unison, causing a seizure. In this case, the spikes are continuous, and excessive.

However, during tongues, the neurons are firing in spikes at much lower frequency intervals. There is a certain advantage to neurons firing in unison, to achieve a successful effect. But in tongues, they are “working together” but the participation is NOT excessive.

What can also cause brain malfunction, is if the neurons never work together, in unison.

Tongues seems to be a condition between the two extremes of excess spikes, and none at all.

Spiritual application of scientific findings

Perhaps man, in his fallen condition, is in a state where his 1) conscious (cognitive) control, 2) structured language, and 3) learning and memory, as changed above, is alienated from God through sin, and a negative worldly environment, that is so very opposite of what Adam experienced in the Garden.

Another way of saying this is that with God, all things work together well, and man’s mind is open to God’s direction and control.

But without God, there are limitations in these 3 areas mentioned above.

Does tongues bring man’s mind back into balance, closer to his original mental state?

split-path

Fake and real tongues

Fake tongues reflects:

1) conscious (cognitive) control,

2) structured language, and

3) learning and memory,

The excess stress created by the excess conscious control could produce excess EEG spikes, and cause a seizure, or partial seizure condition.

Real tongues is the absence of all 3 characteristics. There will be no excess stress, since it is effortless, and God has taken over the brain. The result will be more compared to deep relaxation or sleep. Rest restores the body, and helps it repair from harm.

  2. When Christian leaders say they got filled with the Spirit but did not get tongues, I have to wonder, after what I went thru re; this. I went to the altar many times, seeking the infilling. My church was stearn on believing it always comes with tongues, and I believed them. But I got no tongues. Years later, after giving up, I still once in a while muttered “tongues” under my breath during worship. I noticed when I did this, I saw visions and heard words from God for others present. I found I already had tongues, but had not known it.

Looking back, I can see there was a hesitancy in me to look foolish before others, and that is why I did not believe I got tongues earlier at the altar. I had blocked it myself. I have to wonder if this is why our present leaders often do not get tongues. Maybe they are unwilling to look like a fool to others.

I later had John Wimber as my pastor. One of his famous sayings was, “I am a fool for God. Whose fool are you?” Now I am willing to be a fool for God. I treasure the gift of tongues.. DavWms

  3. Hi David,

Many people cannot receive the baptism in a public setting, while others can. Groups can make us nervous. I went through what you did…..but I finally received the experience alone in my bedroom during private prayer. So all ended well.

I think we receive what we ask for, when it is something special like this, but the manifestation may occur at a later time.

Some do not believe in tongues, and so they will never ask, and so they will never receive or manifest the gift.

Like you said, it is a gift to be treasured.

Karen received an unclean spirit when an “infected” pastor has lain hands on her. She has also had a similar problem after having “opened up” to a Benny Hinn prayer on TV!

She has also received the true gift in the privacy of her home sanctuary. I have asked for the same and did have a once-off experience only years later, but what I did get instead was a gift of prophecy which is aimed at warning His children to remain true to Him, in a true way, especially in these later days.

I also experience a “direct link” between God and myself, which is not involving mind or body.

I do believe on tongues, I do not support it when done in an un-Biblical way in public meetings. Tongues are common amongst the unsaved followers of other religions around the globe. There have been many cases where shamans or shamanism proved the “gift” as from Satan.

Perhaps knowing what spiritual influences are present within an obviously “clean” church is perhaps a good idea. There is much mixed seed in the church today.

      • Satan counterfeits everything G-d does.

When someone receives the baptism of the Holy Spirit, tongues will always be present as it is the language of the Holy Spirit.

Getting drunk in the spirit is a typical example of when bad spirits are part of the occasion. I can write volumes on this, trust me that I have come a very long road with this and can state that those using the words “drunk” and “Holy Spirit” in one sentence are blinded by deception.

Be FILLED with the Holy Spirit, whom will NOT make anyone DRUNK. I was sent as a messenger into a very obstinate church that happily went to spiritual bed with the harlot spirit of the so-called “Toronto blessing” which is a mimic of pagan tribes in the jungles of Africa. They’ve been doing it for thousands of years. Go test the origins…..

      • You dont know what you are missing. How can those people from toronto blessing say Jesus is Lord and so much healing and blessing comes out of it , it sure is not the devil. Go to old testament, when the priests were minstering in the temple of solomon? I think, the glory cloud came on them and it says the fell down until they were not able to minister… who are you to limit God, he can work however he wants.. there was a prophet who said about himself that he would fall down and his eyes would open,…it seems like he would travel in spirit and God would give him prophecies..there is more examples of ways how God works and it could look like weird. So what, let God be God and dont impose your legalese unless anyone is going against the bible then you can condemn it.

  4. I agree with the two of you. I went to the altar, but I left drunk in the Spirit with no tongues. Yet years later it manifest. At that time I could have cared less about the gift, because all I wanted was to minister the word, and I didn’t need tongues to do that, but Holy Ghost power. Even today I still say as Paul said, Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.

I have also been in churches where everyone was speaking in tongues and I did think they were all mad. There was no order.

If anyone speaks in a tongue, it should be by two or at the most three, and each in turn, and one must interpret; 28 but if there is no interpreter, he must keep silent in the church; and let him speak to himself and to God.

23 Therefore if the whole church assembles together and all speak in tongues, and ungifted men or unbelievers enter, will they not say that you are mad?

  5. Hi, Patrick, yes, I’ve also seen tongues used out of order. But most who argue against tongues make a simple mistake. There are several kinds of speaking in tongues. Paul knew when he wrote to the churches, that they would know which type he was talking about in each case.

The first type was shown when Peter stood before the crowd on Pentecost and spoke in his own language. Yet each in the crowd heard the words in their own dialect. No interpretor needed.

The next type is when we pray in tongues, and that is different from the other types. That is when our own words are not sufficient in our talking to the Lord, and the Holy Spirit in us prays thru us, for he knows the right words. No interpretor needed.

Another type tongues is usually what we hear in church, and like Patrick said, it should have interpretors present to let everyone know what God is saying thru the one speaking in tongues. It is often exhalting the Lord Almighty, but sometimes is prophetic words for the people present.. DavWms

When people speak against tongues, more often than not they have not seen the different types, and condemn them all.

    • In public places, DO NOT SPEAK IN TONGUES WITHOUT AN INTERPRETER. PERIOD. David, those wanting to speak in “other” tongues should refrain from doing that IN CHURCH.

How will you discern whether that person is blaspheming the Holy Spirit 9as happened at a pentecostal church that I visited in 1989?

People go against His word and get their damage into their lives.

      • 1 Thessalonians 5:17Pray without ceasing. 18In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. 19 QUENCH NOT THE SPIRIT. 20 Despise not prophesyings.

  6. I agree there are different types, and like you I have seen them used in several ways. I think the most alarming for me was when a young lady was barking like a dog and the pastor was saying let the Lord have His way. And there were still others down on all four crawling around like animals howling. This often happens in many churches where there is a lack of discerment.
Tongues and in a personal pray language it what i’ve seen most.

    • acting like an animal is ALWAYS a demonic manifestation. god always has order, and what you speak of is disorder.

    • G-d expects us to have common sense.

    • This is peculiar. I personally have been baptized in the spirit and know that it’s real. I was watching Donny swaggert one day and he told a story about his dad jimmy swaggert. One time when they were doing mission work in another country, while Jimmy was preaching the whole crowd started barking like dogs. Immediately Jimmy went through the crowd casting out evil spirits until he regained order. So I believe that if the whole church was acting under the power of a spirit of distraction and definitely not operating from the holy spirit.

  7. Yes, Rev. Patrick. I also saw that “Toronto Movement” come into my church, and I watched with amazement. I saw some people actually being dealt with by the Holy Spirit, and some obviously manifesting of demons, and some faking it to look like they were also having an experience with God. And the pastors looking upon it all as if it was ALL of God. Discernment was lacking, and I am concerned that if so many were fooled this time, what will the devil’s next move accomplish?

As that movement progressed, we saw the leaders of it make up excuses for each of the odd manifestations, trying desperately to show it was all from God, even tho it looked like nothing shown in the Bible. People are hungry for God to manifest, and this makes them ready to believe anything supernatural. Sad. DavWms

  8. I know. That it what will lead many to fall for antichrist. If they couldn’t see Obama, they wouldn’t see him, nor will they discern their being deceived. I value your insight and wisdom my brother. Both you and Marianne have shown a great desire to serve the Lord.

  9. Good morning. This is a post to link to when I et time. I’ve never read a report on tongues from a scientific standpoint. I’m not sure how to reply as there are so many thoughts going throughmy mind, but here it goes.

I received the baptism of the Holy Ghost in August of 1984. It was the first time that I had ever visited a full gospel church and it took place during prayer before the ervice. It happened so fast that it caught me off guard.

Fast forward to 2009 and I find that a lot of my prayer time is without understanding and most of this is in song. It almost seems more natural than my own words. Most understandable prayer requests are for those around me; saints that are struggling, unsaved family members, and what have you. As for me, I’m simply content. There’s nothing in this world that I desire, save more time freed up to do that which the Lord has placed on my heart.

I know that we live in a time of incredible deception and that there is a lack of discernment these days. This makes Jude 20 all the more prominent. “But ye beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost.”

I’ll have to revisit this post later on this weekend. Have a blessed day in Jesus.

  10. Tongues. I only have one. That would be a tongue. Sorry. Just in one of those funny moods. It seems “tongues” should be listed with the rule, “You never talk politics, religion or tongues”. It seems many are wired so tight, there beliefs get in the way of their ministry.

The world is lost just like it was 2000 years ago at the day of Pentecost. It is easy to believe the tongues thing happened then, because it was 2,000 years ago. Today in the average church, tongues don’t happen for whatever the reason. Is God grieved, I don’t know. Maybe.

I do know he wants the same thing. He wants to be glorified and that happens when we lead others to exchange their life for the life of Christ. If tongues encourages that to happen, then so be it. If tongues gets in the way, then save it for the prayer closet.

God wants all to love Him.

  11. Hey Archie,

Well, like everything else man can mess up, this is no exception.

If the Holy Spirit is really involved, all will go well, and there will be good fruit produced.

Otherwise, the wacky fake stuff creeps in.

  12. of course speaking in tongues has a measurable effect on the brain, so does everything else. the existance of trance-like states and speaking in tongues has never been in question from a scientific standpoint. what you are implying here that this is evidence of “spirituality” measured by scientific means- this is obviously nonsense.

speaking in tongues is not a purely christian phenomena. it was passed down to us from ancient forms of spirituality which used ‘shaman’ or ‘spirit guides’ (often under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs of course). whether you call it “deep relaxation”, “hallucination” or “spirituality” is really immaterial, these are all labels for the same thing- which is a material occurence.

if you would like to delude yourself into beleiving this is a “miracle from god” then don’t let me stop you. it may be more interesting to realise that what you are really doing is tapping into your subconscious mind. the surrealist and dada art movements are exemplary of how fascinating this can be- many drawings, paintings, sculptures and performance pieces used exactly this technique.

p.s. much of your interpretation of that science is deeply flawed. “Over the last some number of years, this hardcore materialism (in science) has eroded” this simply isn’t true. determinism is still a question of philosophy and not of science.

  13. Dear zarathustra

You quote you disagreed with came from the article where the speakers were:
David Brooks, Columnist, The New York Times
Andrew Newberg, Assistant Professor, Department of Radiology, University of Pennsylvania

The points were summarized above, but I will repeat one of them. Speaking in tongues, if genuine, and not contrived, will be the result of decreased cognitive function, not more of it. It is also a measurable experience.

The issue is how does this come about? The religious position is that the mind relaxes and God takes over. The scientific position is that it can exist, but it does not know how to produce this effect itself. It cannot point to a source.

I suggest you try to speak in tongues, and have someone measure your brain. If it shows increased cognitive function, then it is not the real thing. If it shows the opposite, then you made it.

Before you critique a phenomenon, it would be wise to understand it. Until you do understand this, and reproduce it in order to study it, you cannot correctly label it science, philosophy, shamanism, or God.

    blessings
    marianne

  14. your reply fails to answer or even understand any of the points i just made.

of course it is the result of a lessening of cognitive function. it is the process of letting the brain slip into a kind of autopilot. meditation is one way of doing it.

out of interest, could you tell me how in that study thet induced tongues in the people who’s brains they measured?

  15. Hi zarathustra.

One thing I thought was interesting was the fact that more language came out of a person, when they disconnected their conscious effort, sort of speak, and just used less brain matter. So they accomplish more, with less effort? It seems like the opposite of what we try to do every day. We typically increase our efforts to accomplish more, not the opposite.

The tongues in this study were not induced. To induce brain spikes, for example, would be a safety risk, since the person could go into seizures. This would be unethical to harm a patient.

The person was already like that before they came in. That is also interesting from a scientific standpoint, which raises the question, how does this happen if the person is putting out no conscious effort.

Tongues, if genuine, which can be confirmed by the brain scan, raises the question of its source. I understand you to be an atheist, so you would not consider God as a source. But then, if not God, where does the language come from?

Normally we think of language as a product of learning. It takes us a few years to teach our very young children to talk.

Is it possible that language is actually innate, and does not have to be learned? If we would stop teaching, and forcing learning on the brain, would it come up with information on its own, because it has been allowed to relax?

    Just some thoughts.

  16. It does not surprise me that “tongues” have been around in places other than the Christian circles. I dealt with a woman seeking healing from terminal cancer. She said she would not turn herself over to God until He healed her, first. Several of us tried to convince her she was telling a sovereign God what He had to do, and it likely would not work. When we tried to tell her the Gospel, she began babbling, or I should say, blubbering in tongues. When she did this, we could feel the evil, and knew she was demonized and it was speaking thru her to stop her from hearing the truth. It always stopped on command, but only until our next effort to get her to see the truth. She never would give in to God, and eventually died of her cancer.

BTW, I once saw a glowing orange ball about the size of a tennis ball, hovering in front of her face. It went back into her as i came near. DavWms

    • Hi dave,

That is a good point. Not every unstructured language in tongues reflects God. It could also be demonic. I have mentioned this on other pages but not this one, I should update the post.

      thanks

  17. After reading there were only five people tested, I quit reading. That is not science. That is liability for fraud. There must be a large number of persons from various areas, backgrounds, ages, and ethnicity. The people then are split into two groups with one being the control group in order to make a test valid. This type of “report” is what makes non-Christians say Christians are uneducated fools. Preach the word.

    • dear Lisa,

This website is not an online scientific publication. The data was NOT collected by uneducated Christians, but scientists.

For glossalalia, the negative control would be someone who did not speak in tongues. There is already plenty of data on this. The positive control would be the subject who was capable of tongues, but is not actively speaking in them.

The publications apparently passed peer review and the editorial board for the Journals, so the level of controls were adequate.

The idea behind this post was not to present data to the science community, but to inform the Christian community that scientists have been studying glossalalia, and found physical evidence for it.

There are plenty of spirit filled Christians who would be happy to be test subjects for testing, since it is an interesting phenomenon.

The scientists only need to ask for more subjects to increase the data base.

The Word is preached here. Remember that God is the creator of science, and we find increasing evidence in science of what has already been declared as true in the Word.

Man is just starting to discover, and prove, what God has always known, and established long ago.

As Christians, we already know the Word is true. But it is good to hear that unbelievers are finding reason to believe as well.

By the way, I was curious where you got that picture at the top of the page and what is it of? It looks like some sort of flames or whatnot all around the people?! DO you know what it is?

    • Hi Catrina,

I got the picture off the internet – images section. It is a revival in Zimbabwe. It looks like tongues of fire over their heads, just like on Pentecost. I thought it fit my topic.

  19. marianne,

Being filled in the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues, is very personal to me.
It is for my personal prayer life, and very powerful. It is my direct line to HIM, and He has done some very wonderful things for me as I pray in tongues.
I was taught it was of the devil. I backslid and when I came back to the Lord, about 30 years ago, I did not go to church, and did not belong to a church.
I picked up my bible, dusted it off, and started to read it and pray. I also turned on TBN every night. I started seeing all the ways I had been deceived, and I wanted what they had.
The difference was , they had the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. I stayed home, read the bible and prayed. I never prayed for the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, I just studied about it.
I began realizing I was groaning when I prayed. I did this for a long time, when I read that was the Holy Spirit in the bible. I gave HIM my tongue and it flowed out. I was at home, with husband in bed. I could not wait to get alone with HIM at night.
God eventually led me to a Spirit filled church, where I had good teaching. I was not deceived any more.
It is not scientific, it is not a phenomenon, it is very real and powerful, and very private to me. There is no way you can convince someone that does not believe in tongues that it is real. It is one of those things you must experience, and no one can tell us it is not real, we have experienced it.

    Patty

    • Thanks Patty,

Yes, the experience is really spiritual. We have so many unbelievers, even within the church, that sometimes they will not believe anything until they see “proof.” Those with the faith will not need this. Those with little or no faith need more.

God seems to provide whatever is needed to reach people, even science, so there is no excuse for rejecting the truth of the holy spirit. For me, the Word was enough to convince me, once I actually realized that this precious gift was available to me. It has really kept my sanity and soul through difficult times, when I had no idea what to say in prayer, because the situations were so confusing.

I was sexually abused when I was a child. After my deliverance, I saw my boyfriend in a different manner. I became distant, I kinda showed hate towards him. I also experienced oppression and a sharp pain on my left shoulder. I also experienced restless nights and my spirit felt like Jello..meaning) when I laid down I felt like I was trembling. I also felt fear, anxiety, and stress, and bad luck. I also had bad news and my son came home drunk and began to get angry..So its almost a month now and ttoday, I eel relaxed sort of. But it was a fight..at one point I thought my soul was going to leave my body. I felt it driting, after my deliverance a few days later, I also experienced a nervouse break down, and my chest was sore or awhile. I had some pins poking me, but that started way before…got worse after being delivered. One women spoke in tounges, no transelators and it was hands on healing. I felt possessed with a religious spirit. my question is..Is this normal? she said demons attack you after cause they dont like you being delivered and also they are in shock..I had healing from a Shaman a long time ago ater experiencing witchcraft, and she took it off and I felt fine and relief. I also Felt at peace…SO what is the difference..?

    • Hi Brandy,

You have had a rough time. What grieves me at this time is that there are others like you who go for deliverance and then end up dealing with religious spirits, who make things worse.

True deliverance comes from God, and you will feel like your authority has been restored. It will be permanent, although you do have to guard against counterattack, since the spirits do not like to leave. In this you build yourself up with prayer and reading the bible, and you get others that you trust to pray for you.

In false deliverance, the relief is either temporary, or if the problem seems to be gone, it has really been replaced with a different problem. Sometimes, demons will obey another demon, because they have a hierarchy. But the door is open to future problems, because the person does not have the infilling of the holy spirit to protect the person from another occurrence.

    • shaman and witchdoctors do this by satan and have you take on a demon to be healed, someone who REALLY knows about deliverance will have god work through them to deliver you.

    • Brandy

My dearest darling wife went through the same….. I cannot stress this too much….be very careful of these deliverance sessions. I myself picked up a God-taunting laughing spirit after someone had lain hands on me. I hat to repent and get deliverance, privately in my own bedroom with just God and me.

My wife (read higher up) got under the power of demons and had made our life hell for more than a decade. She finally received deliverance but it took rather radical action from my side.

Frankly – there is so much demonic activity which I am witness to, having seen much myself, in the entire charismatic environment. I am of the belief that maybe five per cent is legit, the rest can safely be discarded.

Perhaps a good idea to trust GOD only, double check with HIM and not with people.

  21. marianne,

One morning years ago, our son called and said his son, our grandson, had fallen the night before and hit the back of his head on concrete. He was then 2 years old. He had cried with pain all night . They had called the doctor and he said get him to the hospital. My husband and I met them at the hospital. My grandson had been vomiting all night, could not keep anything down. Of course, you know these are symptoms of a brain concussion. They were getting him ready for tests. I laid hands on him and prayed all tests would show no concussion and be normal. Every test they did came out normal, no concussion. He was still very sick. Every sip of gatoraid came up. And in very much pain with his head. They decided to admit him and keep him over night.
They told his mother if he did not keep anything down, they would have to hook him up to IV fluids.
Everyone went home but his mother, who stayed with him all night. I could not wait to get into deep prayer, the tongues were bubbling up in my throat.
Finally I got alone and could pray. I had prayed everything I knew to pray in my own language, it was time for tongues. I raised my arms, and the tongues started. Soon I heard in my own language, ” Lord, let me take his pain.” I knew the Holy Spirit was letting me know what I was praying in tongues. Instantly a sharp pain went from my finger tips all the way through my body.
I was speachless. I checked the time, and it was 10:00 pm. I had such a peace, and I KNEW my grandson was healed.
I went to bed and slept all night. I got up early the next morning and went to the hospital. I went in his room to find him running around playing with toys.
His mother told me the most amazing thing happened. She said she had gone to the bathroom at 10:00 pm, and when she returned, my grandson had crawled over the railings on his bed, gulped down half the bottle of gatoraid and drank it, and crawled back in bed, and slept the rest of the night. I told my daughter in law what had happened, and we both cried. She was not a believer, but was touched.
They sent him home, and we never knew what had happened.
    But I knew.
The Power of the Holy Spirit!!!!

    • Hi Patty

That is awesome. We need more testimony like that. You can pray for me anytime. 🙂

    • Just read this..year later…that is an awesome, awe inspiring testimony. It is just sooooo amazing what G-D can do-it saddens me to read other posts where they have so much skepticism and doubt. And you can certainly pray for me anytime as well :)….I was told once LONG ago, to be careful who you ask to pray for you…make sure they are praying in G-Ds will. Its hard to determine that if they pray in their own language, but if the HS is praying, then you KNOW its G-Ds will!!

    • I have just read this today and am thankful that God has touched more people. I too had a problem believing he had given me that wonderful gift but once i was reassured, there was nothing to stop me.

it doesnt matter what people say about tongues because God is the author. I have seen so many things changing after spending time speaking in tongues.
      God bless you all.

      • hi evelyn

I am glad this post affirms your personal experience. God is our Father, and will not give us negative things when we ask for what is holy. I wish you continued blessings in your prayer life.

  22. Just so you know, Patty is an online friend of mine. We frequent a Christian chatroom and also we pray together often. We are a close group of believers. Patty and I agreed to let each other know if anything serious happened to either of us. We live on opposite coasts of the USA.

Anyway, I had a stroke about 2 weeks ago. I could barely type an email to her saying i was having a stroke, then the 911 medics came. When she read the email early the next morning, she got all the chatroom friends praying for me, and I’m sure much was in tongues. Let it be known that those prayers got me out of the hospital short of 3 days, total. The Drs were amazed how I came in near death, and improved so quickly. This is a testimony of prayer being answered. DavWms

You are fortunate to have a good friend like Patty. I am glad you could recover so well. I hope you are ok now.

      • Marianne, thanks so much for sending me this. I had really forgotten about this. I feel good knowing God is still using this and it is touching others. It is very personal to me, and I dont usually share it. In fact, this two year old grandson is now 25 and has been in the Marines for four years and is now married and has two beautiful boys. He is very special to me and everyone else.

        Blessings,

  23. I don’t believe that “barking and crawling on all fours “are anything from God… pastors who see this in their church, should speak up,do something, not right…

  24. Why do you think the Bible says to ‘try the spirits not every one is From God…

  25. some may think I am wrong is what I say, but if I was in a church that let this happen, I would be leaving….

  26. Deb, I would also be out of there. Pastors are suppose to lead the sheep, and most are not doing it.
    I agree with you!!!

  27. PLEASE LORD DON’T LET ME BE A STUMBLEBLOCK O ANYONE…
I must say that i belief in the fruit of the SPIRIT of which tongues is but one of them, according to the bible not all of us will get all of the fruit…some will have healing, some discerning and some tongues etc. Now,what is suspicious to me is that the charismatic chearches and their preachers teach us that one MUST be able to speak in tongues when touched by the HOLY SPIRIT.

That is totally not biblical to me and a huge farce to artificially raise the spiritual level in the congregation and to gife satan a way to infiltrate the congregation…no one in that confusion when everyone and their grandma is speaking in tongues knows just which is from God and witch is from Satan…..I have attended such chearches for a number of years and was babtised in water and in SPIRIT and i truly belief to have received the gift of discerning…..and NOT of tongues… and let me tell you we have been fed a lie for many years….a chearch service should be quiet, serene and orderly with one speaking in a tongue at a time as the bible told us.

Everything in live should be test against the bible…you’ll be surprised to see how few things will stand the test.

    • Hi Frik,

What you say is true. Not everyone gets all the gifts. This post is about this one gift, and how to tell, at least scientifically, if someone is faking it, or has the real thing.

    • Amen, Frik and Marianne.

My wife (we are Afrikaans from South Africa) could und4erstand when we had visited a Maori island in the South Pacific. There are wonderful true Christians but also those mixing occult tradition with Christianity. When someone were making plans to harm us, she could understand every word…as it was her prayer language. Yet she can ONLY understand what they are saying when God deems it NECESSARY. She still is no walking thesaurus.

We are called to be disciples which are disciplined followers, therein lies the problem with the indiscipline and ego trips as found within what I call the charismania.

Tongues are natural in Tibet, Asia-Pacific, Pygmies in the Congo, natives in South American forests and apparently also in the aboriginal tradition in Australia. Practised for thousands of years, christianity is a newcomer to the party, also with what is called the Toronto “blessing.”

Suffice to say that it is very interesting indeed and the scientific results as above really very interesting.

As for church, follow the Bible’s advice to the full, it is there for our protection.

  28. Wow. The topic of tongues makes a very interesting and emotional study. Unfortunately, most of what I have read here are personal opinions and/or experiential accounts. Has any one done a thorough study from the scriptures? God’s word has to be the final authority until the day we can ask him face to face. So here’s the challenge: let’s hear what you can find to support or negate the “gift of tongues”…

    • Hi Ian,

In this post, I show the science side of tongues, for those who are not spiritually inclined.

See the links at the end of the post, where I refer you onto other pages, that give scriptural references. The power failure one is quite helpful, I think.

      • Hi Marianne,

Found my way to this one…:)

Regarding: “and God has taken over the brain. The result will be more compared to deep relaxation or sleep. Rest restores the body, and helps it repair from harm. ”

This made me think of my horse accident back in July 08. I was told that I landed on my head and had an immediate seizure. Doctors stated that the impact was comparable to falling from 6ft at 55mph. When I did “awake” some hour or hours later..I can’t be sure…I had amnesia and didn’t know where I was or who I was….HOWEVER!!!! I did REMEMBER GOD! How could this be? Well, after reading this post I realize it was due to the Holy Spirit who is inside of me! I received him 20 plus years ago. The next 2 to 3 days after being life flighted to a trauma center was DEEP SLEEP. On the second or maybe it was the 3rd (still a blur) I awoke and spoke and walked etc…Doctors were confused not understanding how I was able to talk or walk. They said later that there had been blood on the brain when they brought me in and were preparing for surgery and then when they checked the CAT again there was nothing there. I was sleeping of course during all of this so I am only going by what they told me, however, I do remember being extremly thirsty and wanting water and I remember someone saying I couldn’t have anything because of the surgery….Needless to say, I know that this was a miracle. And my neurologist even stated this. God is amazing because He knew what was going to happen and had told me prior to riding to wear a helmet. I remember that very well. I remember standing in front of the tack shed looking at a helmet and feeling the urging and words of the HS to wear one (it wasn’t mine so I used this as an excuse not to wear it). When I closed the door to the shed I felt that I was making a mistake. Despite my disobedience, God chose to heal me through his Holy Spirit!

    • Acts Chapter 2 and Corithians chapter 13

You can also read “the baptism in the Holy spirit” by smith wigglesworth-this is the book that I was reading when I received the Baptism! I can tell you its real all day long but until you experience it for yourself there is not much more I could say. Jesus says that it is for anyone who asks and that the Authority to give the Holy Spirit was given to Jesus (It is Jesus who gives the Holy Spirit so you have to ask him)

    • 1 Corinthians 14 …”2)For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God. Indeed, no one understands him;…22) Tongues, then, are a sign, not for believers but for unbelievers; prophecy, however, is for believers, not for unbelievers..”

      Acts 2
The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost
1When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. 2Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them. ”

      Acts 1:4
4On one occasion, while he (Jesus) was eating with them (disciples), he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5 For John baptized with[a] water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

    • Here ya go:

      Mark 16: 17And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; THEY SHALL SPEAK WITH NEW TONGUES’;

      Luke 4:1

Luke 11:13If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

      Luke 12:11
      John 14:15
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
15 ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments.
      16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and SHALL BE IN YOU.
18 ¶ I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
John 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.

***Acts, the entire chapter speaks of the Holy Spirit

Acts 1:4On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. 5For John baptized witha water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Acts 1:8 8But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Acts 2:1And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

      Acts 2:14….be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: 15For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day. 16But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;

17And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

18And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my Spirit; and they shall prophesy:

Acts 2:38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, AND ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. 39For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.

      Acts 19:

1While Apollos was at Corinth, Paul took the road through the interior and arrived at Ephesus. There he found some disciples 2and asked them, “DID YOU RECIEVE the Holy Spirit whena you believed?”

They answered, “No, we have not even heard that there is a Holy Spirit.”

3So Paul asked, “THEN WHAT BAPTISM DID YOU RECEIVE?”

      “John’s baptism,” they replied.

4Paul said, “JOHN’S BAPTISM WAS A BAPTISM OF REPENTANCE. He told the people to believe in the one coming after him, that is, in Jesus.” 5On hearing this, they were baptized intob the name of the Lord Jesus. 6When Paul placed his hands on them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and THEY SPOKE IN TONGUESc and prophesied. 7There were about twelve men in all.

***Acts 19:1-7 Clearly shows that there are 2 separate baptisms and that speaking in tongues comes AFTER the Holy Spirit baptism.

*** 1Corinthians, explains the spiritual gifts that come AFTER the baptism of the Holy Spirit

      1 Corinthians 3:16
      1 Corinthians 6:19
      1 Corinthians 14:4
      1 Corinthians 12:7

Romans 5: 5And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Romans 8: 5For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (to be after the spirit and spritually minded comes from receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit)

Romans 8:9But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, IF SO BE that the Spirit of God DWELL IN YOU

Romans 8:11But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead SHALL ALSO QUICKEN YOUR MORTAL BODIES BY HIS SPIRIT THAT DWELLETH IN YOU. (this sounds like the Holy Spirit is the one who will help us ascend to meet Jesus Christ in the air 🙂

Romans 8:26Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. 27And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

      Romans 14:17

  29. Acts 1
The Promise of the Holy Spirit
1 In my first book[a] I told you, Theophilus, about everything Jesus began to do and teach 2 until the day he was taken up to heaven after giving his chosen apostles further instructions through the Holy Spirit. 3 During the forty days after his crucifixion, he appeared to the apostles from time to time, and he proved to them in many ways that he was actually alive. And he talked to them about the Kingdom of God.
4 Once when he was eating with them, he commanded them, “Do not leave Jerusalem until the Father sends you the gift he promised, as I told you before. 5 John baptized with[b] water, but in just a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

  30. Hello Lyndsey,
It has been good being brought back to this site and seeing my old post above. I had forgotten I ever posted here.
If people would only read God’s word and not just believe what they have been taught, they would see tongues are for today and pray for Jesus to give them the gift.
Power comes with this gift and our prayers become more powerful.
I have found it is useless to try to convince someone who was taught against tongues, or even the gift of prophecy. My gift of tongues is for me only in my prayer time. I have had many experiences that no one can take away from me or ever convince me tongues is not for today.
Thanks for posting here and to marianne for letting me know.

  31. Hey Check Out My Site, Read Up About Tongues.

    TruePathToHeaven.weebly.com

  32. Marianne,
As we all must know, all of the gifts are misused in some way. Even the most precious gift of salvation is sometimes used in a wrong way. It is so wrong to judge if a gift is for us by seeing how it is abused and misused. Yes, tongues are not used properly many times. But it is a shame some have decided it is not for them. If they just would ask the Holy Spirit to reveal truth to them, they would know. He is our teacher.
Good to be brought back to this site, and my favorite topic.

    Patty

  33. Why is this so important to some Christians? Simply because it soothes the ego and allows membership to an elite club. After many decades, I have experienced it in the BIBLICAL way but ONCE in a church…where the message was REJECTED!

Christians should be more concerned about their relationship with God than go gift-hunting. mMtt 7:21 harbours a nasty surprise………..

  34. It is my understanding talking in tongues only happened at Pentecost.

I seen a Church where just about everyone was muttering in tonges, and I thought they were all crazy, and making a show. I bet I was right.

    • Hey Leatherneck,

In scripture it talks about speaking in tongues (another language never learned before) as being evidence to the unbeliever. I have heard, never saw with my own eyes, that there was this person-not sure of gender- who went to the altar to pray during a church service. He/She was praying in the spirit/tongues when the person next to him/her started to ask him/her how she knew this or that….the person praying in tongues had no idea what this other person was talking about…come to find out, when he/she was praying in the spirit, the HS was praying in the other persons’ language and was talking to the person beside him/her. Talk about witnessing! Pretty incredible.

Regarding your experience above, I also thought they were crazy when I was first exposed. When I received the baptism of the Holy Spirit, shortly thereafter, I immediately starting “hearing” another language/syllables in my thoughts. As I opened my mouth and gave the Holy Spirit control, I began to speak in another language/tongues and have ever since then, for 21 years. For me, it has always been a private prayer language and really helped me grieve the loss of my father (Romans 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God’s will.). Praying in the spirit also helps when your praying for someone and you have no clue what words to use in your own language-allowing the Holy Spirit to intercede, letting Him pray in whatever language He chooses, I feel speeds up the prayer being answered if that makes any sense. I feel that it reaches heaven quicker (this is my opinion). Regarding the “gift of tongues” where there is supposed to be an interpreter whenever spoken aloud in public, I truly don’t have any experience with this personally and can only refer you to read Corinthians 13 and 14 where paul explains the gifts.

When the Holy Spirit is the one praying-it is genuine. Over the past 21 years I have heard several languages spoken by the Holy Spirit…this just amazes me each and every time. But again, it is private and not for “show”. What they do in churches can often times scare those who don’t understand and pastors should be sensitive to this.

      • and found in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing. After receiving the Holy Spirit, I was able to understand this one simple verse…..It is humanly impossible for us to pray without ceasing/stopping….we have to eat, drink and sleep….HOWEVER, when receiving the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, the HS prays without ceasing…I can actually be having a conversation with someone and hear the HS praying…it is hard to explain…but I can pray in the spirit while also eating, drinking, talking and sleeping….I have actually awoken while praying in the spirit. So, yes, tongues is NOT just for pentecost 2000 years ago! Praying in the spirit was meant for us as well and once you receive the Holy Spirit, so much will make sense and the scriptures will literally “come alive” per se…verses will jump out at you and you will begin to understand things that you never understood before, or maybe you thought you understood it to be one way but when the HS explains it to you then it is an “aha” moment…He is just amazing Leatherneck! I urge you to seek the promise of the Holy Spirit-we will all need HIM in these last days and this was Jesus’ purpose in giving the Holy Spirit to us-to lead us into all truth; to be our comforter; to empower us, so as to be a better witness to Christ and to seal us unto the day of redemption!

The Promise of the Holy Spirit
John 14:15 ¶ If ye love me, keep my commandments.
        16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
17 even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall BE IN YOU.

  35. Leatherneck and Umlungu

True tongues is dignified, holy, and private.

It is only for 2 reasons:

    witnessing to foreigners,

and private prayer, when words are hard to find for what we want to say.

People making a display of themselves with a counterfeit experience are fools, and are open to all sorts of demonic or egotistical suggestions.

  36. email from Lyndsey

To summarize, why then should we encourage speaking in tongues today, in the 21st century?

    • Jesus said that believers would (Mark 16:17).

    • Tongues certify and give evidence that the person is baptized with the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:5; 2:1-4; 10:44-46; 11:15-17; 19:1-6).

    • Speaking in tongues is a good opportunity to submit to the Holy Spirit’s leading (Acts 2:4).

    • Tongues demonstrate the reality of God in the speaker’s life (Acts 11:15-18).

    • The baptism with the Holy Spirit, evidenced by speaking in tongues, opens the door to other gifts of the Spirit (Acts 19:2,6).

    • Tongues with interpretation are “for the [church’s] common good” (1 Corinthians 12:7, 10).

    • Speaking in tongues is speaking to God (1 Corinthians 14:2a).

    • Praying in tongues is praying “in” or “with the Spirit” (1 Corinthians 14:2, 14-15).

    • The speaker in tongues is edified (1 Corinthians 14:4).

    • The apostle Paul expressly approved of tongues (1 Corinthians 14:5a, 39).

    • A tongue followed by an interpretation edifies the church (1 Corinthians 14:5, 12-13).

    • Tongues allow us a balanced prayer and worship life, both with the spirit and with the understanding (1 Corinthians 14:14-15).

    • When speaking in tongues, you may be giving thanks well to God (1 Corinthians 14:16-17).

    • Speaking in tongues was apostolic practice (1 Corinthians 14:18 and at Pentecost).

    • Tongues with interpretation are an appropriate, strengthening part of an edifying church service (1 Corinthians 14:26).

From the bottom of my heart, I commend to you the words of the apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 14:5: “I would like every one of you to speak in tongues.”

    • I learned something new these last few days. When trying to explain “tongues” and why it is the evidence of receiving the Holy Spirit to a certain individual, the Holy Spirit explained “tongues” to me!! LOL

He explained that tongues will always be present after receiving Him-the baptism in the Holy Spirit-BECAUSE this is HIS LANGUAGE! Tongues has nothing to do with us or a special “gift” per se. The GIFT is actually receiving the Holy Spirit!! AMEN!

“tongues” is simply the Holy Spirit talking and praying-HIS LANGUAGE. You can’t have one without the other!!

This made such perfect sense! G-d is Simple and we make Him out to be more complicated then we need to.

  37. Dave and I remain close friends, now for many years. We have never met. We are prayer partners with others. Dave has had more problems, but is doing better just recently. Friday nite we prayed for him to be able to walk better, and he has reported he walked quite a distance since. He is going to be alright.

    Patty

  38. Hi, Marianne, and all the old friends from way back. Patty fwd this post from a long time ago. Marianne, I saw you ask Patty how I am. I had to leave off blogging because my blood pressure rises, and having already had a mini stroke, it seemed wise to stop. Since then, I have had conjestive heart failure, and supposedly a heart attack.

After the attack, they put a stent in my heart, and after that I began having angina. A newer Dr. wanted to put in more stents, but during the surgery, they found all my heart veins were too small in diameter to fit stents. But they encouraged me that I had many extra veins that made up for the small size.

Patty and I still have our prayer meetings, and I believe our prayers are heard in Heaven. I no longer have angina, and I can also walk further without fatigue. Praise the Lord!!

I stll remember the good times we had blogging on many different subjects on this site. I know that for me, that era has ended. But I wanted to say hi, and thank you for remaining faithful to help so many who need to hear truth.

    Love, Dave

    • hi Dave

Sorry to hear of all the problems, but God seems to be making a way out of all of them for you. We miss you, and wish you well. You will always be a part of this site.

Someday soon, I hope, Jesus will come. So i hope to finally meet you “in the air” !!

  39. After a church service that was teaching about David dancing and singing to God, I went home and was studying and reviewing what had been taught it was nothing to do with tongues or Holy Spirit it was about personal worship. I was laying back on my bed studying the Word and all the sudden my entire body was overwhelmed with what felt like warm very thick Jello flowing through me, it caused me to sit up and my arms even were held up, I seriously thought i was going to be lifted right up off the bed. I seemed to not be worried as I felt it was God renewing me? I did after what seemed like 5-10 mins have an urgency to pray, I jumped off the bed and onto my knees and some utterances I will call them, came out, and then I was seriously concerned as to what was really happening? I can now pray in toungues and do so very quietly when I know I am completly alone, I will also say my life and heart have changed dramaticly in a way that I would have never been able to do on my own. I see things in a light that tells me how temparary our stay is here and it is not even about me, it is about Christ Jesus and His Lordship over His creation that satan is trying to overthrow? seriously satan is trying to steal Gods children and take over Christ Jesus’s position? I do not understand why satan continues to try to do the impossible but he does maybe just to try to inflict pain onto God? As he does know he has lost already? If anyone has had similar expierience with toungues or the Holy Spirit please, I would like some feed back and discussion on this

    • hi tony

People receive the gift of tongues in different ways, and your experience has happened to people also.

I think the way it happened to you was a blessing, and a special comfort to you, to strengthen you and convict you, in case anyone criticizes it, or tries to cast doubt in your mind.

      my own testimony is here

So rejoice in your new experience, and stay close to the Lord now!

    • Tony,

      My brother in the Lord.
Greetings to you and blessings as well in the fulness of our HOLY GOD, and Savior KING.

Many are starting to experience this pouring out.
I believe that it is God the Holy Father fulfilling Joel 2:28,29.

Be Blessed and give thanks to our Lord Yeshua HaMashiach, Jesus Christ our Worthy Lamb.
      Praise the LORD. Amen.

May the fulness of His Shalom be with you.

  40. every time when i go to church and they start talking in tonges i start going in to a sezure why is that

    • dear victoria

I would wonder what kind of church you go to. the holy spirit does not cause seizures. It may either be demonic or you have a medical problem.

  41. […] see https://heavenawaits.wordpress.com/speaking-in-tongues-%E2%80%93-the-science-and-the-spirit/ to further experience the spiritual […]

  42. It sounds to me like speaking in tongues is simply an ability to bypass the language area of the brain while in a prayerful state. It can apparently be understood by some as well, which seems to lend itself more to the emotive expression of the sounds – much as one might interpret the feeling of an abstract painting. Having it in the context of a prayer allows for much easier interpretation as well.

Supernatural or not, it’s still a pretty neat thing!

    • hi jason

It sounds like you have the desire for it. Just pray about it.

best wishes. and if you have any questions about it, let me know.

      • Thanks Marianne.

I may have experience with a form of it, when I have worked on writing songs I have done something similar. Kind of like scat, but more open.

  43. Interesting, two questions I have, first one regarding first photo with people at a service or event, what exactly all am I seeing because I see what appears to be another realm/dimension captured? Its busy with alot going on there to pick out specific stuff because theres etheric energy, some facial formation, maybe orbs or residual energy too? First time I’ve seen photograph with this much captured not in third dimension. Second question, saw seizures mentioned, I am not epileptic as far as grand mal seizures but I do have absence seizures, aka petit mal. Anyone else experience those type with tongues? I have gotten four of the gifts but haven’t gotten the tongues yet, not focusing or in rush but asking because seeing about triggering and I want to know if risks of one like me having grand mal seizures and prevention if there is risk and safety if not home precautions. Its not my decision when tongues show, just want insight on epilepsy part, etc. Thanks

    • true tongues are from the holy spirit, and will not cause you harm….you will be at peace, and in control of your body.

spirits, both good and bad, can be in a church service…because there are bot good and bad people everywhere.

God is not an orb….but I cannot say for sure what the orbs are…..I have heard of them before.

I would focus on Jesus, and not the orbs

  44. I received my baptism of the Holy Spirit around 15 years ago. Since then I have strayed from Him and sinned a few times….I have asked forgiveness. But even though I strayed when I prayed for help with my sin He still spoke through me…..how can that be? I was sinning……I’m very confused…

    • andrea

why is forgiveness hard for you to understand? it is like the sin never happened.

god is not going to leave you over a few mistakes.

  45. I do understand forgiveness……but I was taught that the Holy Spirit will not dwell in an unclean vessel. I was unclean because of the sin in my life. What does that mean? Am I wrong?

    • andrea

While I do not know all the details of your life, you said you asked for forgiveness, so that removes “uncleanness.”

If you made a few mistakes, that will not force the holy spirit from you….it would have to be a lifestyle of life of sin to do that.

everyone sins at times, but he will not leave us just for that.

in fact, it is the holy spirit IN us that moves us to repent.

unclean means that you are sinning ALL THE TIME and do not CARE or want forgiveness.

  46. OK……I totally understand now……it’s all about the repentance and humbleness of your heart!! That makes me feel so much better!! Thank you for helping me understand! Satan also wants us to feel unworthy and question it…..I do not have the gift of interpretation…..but I feel God has laid that in my mind…b/c I keep thinking back to it. Satan WANTS me to feel the way I’m feeling……I’m so glad I found your site! It is a total blessing!!

    • andrea

tell that idiot satan to drop dead !!!!!

he thrives on people’s sense of guilt, and most of the guilt is his, not theirs.

    • Guilt is how Old Knob keeps people away from searching for G-d the Father in Christ’s name.

You have been forgiven by G-d. Now, do good works and show yourself to be following Jesus. All of us are unclean. That is why we need Jesus to live forever.

      Peace out.

  47. Hello Marianne.

It is my sincerest apologies to bother you about this, yet I am all too keen to perhaps, in love, study the subject of tongues/glossolalia; so that we may find truth in humility and fear of God. The practice isn’t solely Christian-based… So science can’t really help there, though it affirms spiritual going ons. Furthermore, history proves have even been accounts of Montanists, Gnostics, cults, etc. having counterfeits in the name of Christ. So.

In doing research historically and Scripturally, there is ample backing for the “tongues” being xenoglossia ( real, human, though unlearned, languages ), and not glossolalia as we know it in Pentecostal and Charismatic circles. The first epistle to the Corinthians does mention a language “of angels.” But since Paul was using hyperboles throughout the chapter, it seems safe to assume that, this too, is a hyperbole to make a point on how love is the best way.

If the tongues one has is genuine, not from the self, or demonically acquired, then we’d know the fruits. The epistles to the Galatians, Romans, and Ephesians give us a good rundown of what will be present if we walk according to the flesh and sin. They also give good examples of what will be present if we walk according to the Spirit. However, the problem is this: I’ve found mixed fruits for mixed trees. Meaning, different trees/people brought forth different fruit, bearing glossolalia or not. Some seem to have borne good fruit with the addition of glossolalia ( the Quakers are a good example, I think ), others haven’t and have instead deteriorated. And in the cases of more prominent speakers…? Well, certain accusations are merely accusations, with little or strange backing; while other claims are true, we should remember that even the churches and apostles fell to sin and hypocrisy. What’s of more importance is, the speakers repent… As some have.

And in the case of personal experience: Glossolalia had made me fear and love God more; it was a gift I sought since childhood and received at home. The addition of it brought healing to my body, taught me how to pray, to seek God’s word, and to yearn to exhibit fruits of the Spirit.

Therefore, I am looking to find out if anyone has seen more fruit in their lives after glossolalia had come in. I am also looking to find any instances where glossolalia IS truly xenoglossia ( I am unsure about my own case??? Because God seems to have made my tongues English for years??? ), not a “heavenly language” as some say with little proper Scriptural backing… It would be nice to hear accounts from people with similar experiences as mine, to either affirm or disprove any theology or stance. Research on the kind of tongue can only do so much, I think, for I know God has His “anomalies,” even in Scripture. I mean, David was driven to dance naked by His Spirit, something which would have been sin, if not for God actually ordaining it. Who’s to say He hadn’t ordained certain cases of glossolalia, except by testing the fruits?

    • sherry

I agree we are seeing a mixed assortment of tongues…..we need to remember that the counterfeit tries to copy the original….but when testing the spirits, the fruit that is not from the original Spirit will be quite plastic, to say the least, goodness will be a forced effort.

I hope I can say that I have born good fruit since my baptism in tongues…this website is one outcome of it. a book I wrote is another…but it is very strange talking about my own fruit, and this observation should be better done by another brother or sister in the Lord, to be objective.

a peaceful spirit should always be an outcome as well….

      • Yes, certainly. I’ve heard of and experienced cases where genuine tongues brought deliverance for people. A quick Google search also brought me a few cases of genuine xenoglossia. However, there is a lady who’s told me she has delivered people from torment which came with glossolalia, and that the tongues she used to have were understood by demons…. It’s very odd. Yet this may disprove the doctrine of “a language only God knows.”

In any case, glossolalia in Biblical perspective seems to be only xenoglossia, a redemption of Babel. Reading whole chapters and books instead of only key verses would provide us with better context. 1 Corinthians 14: 20-22 brings us back to Isaiah’s time and the first outpouring in Acts, where the “tongues” were human languages.

And in testing the spirits, Paul says in 1 Cor 12: 1-3: “Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans, somehow or other you were influenced and led astray to mute idols. Therefore I want you to know that no one who is speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus be cursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.” This is may be a sufficient test, to prove whether our tongues are demonic or holy, for he provides us with clear contrast, and even prefaces the test with a reminder to the Corinthians about their earlier pagan rites. Historically, the Corinthians were familiar with pagan tongues, thus explaining their fondness and abuse of the Spirit’s tongues. So perhaps this portion of Scripture can be used today with faith in God and His word.

        • sherry

if it is counterfeit tongues, the devil can understand it, since he is providing it. more or less an ancient language not in use today

true tongues from god can either be a mystery language, known only to God ( for protected prayer, so the devil cannot hear and counter it), or a real language, for the purpose of evangelization.

I am not sure what the bible meant by saying,

no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit.”

i used to take it at face value, and accept it like you do. but the bible also indicates demons jesus and the apostles were exposed to that also admitted who they were, admitting jesus was the son of god, and they were cast out.

demons before cast into pigs admitted who jesus was….

demons spoke to fake disciples saying , we know who jesus is and paul is, but who are you?

I also heard, in the past few years, an individual I know is wicked and demon possessed/influenced actually saying “jesus is lord.” so how could he do that?

maybe there are some other qualifying conditions that have to be met when testing the spirits, besides testing for that phrase jesus is Lord.

or maybe over time, satan has changed his game plan, knowing these are tests of the spirit, and goes ahead and admits who jesus is, even though he does not mean it. he is admitting the truth, but does not care about the truth. he just admits it to deceive others, so they will think he is ok.

today, we really have to be careful…..

bible even says there will be a great deception, where even the very elect will be deceived.

          • But is there Scriptural proof for the doctrine of a “protected language,” is what I’m asking? Or did God speak to the originator of this doctrine, and tell him/her specifically such? Further digging may be required. As I understand it, when Paul says he speaks mysteries in his spirit unto God, he perhaps meant xenoglossia without interpretation. That would be consistent with the accounts of Acts and Isaiah, whom he quotes, as well as historical accounts from early church leaders.

It is possible what you propose is true – that the spirit which says “Jesus Christ is Lord” has to mean it with sincerity, even lead the person into believing what he speaks fully in humility. For I did consider the other accounts of demons speaking the truth about Christ, but none of them specifically repeated the words in that order with love, gentleness, and joy; something the Spirit would do to affirm Himself, since He takes from Christ. So I just figured, perhaps the Lord set a limit on the false spirits afterward, like he set a limit on Satan tormenting Job…? Yet your testimony about the man would prove this hypothesis wrong. Anyway, I still think one with faith can pray to God and ask with the Scripture, citing His word’s authority and His authority over every spirit.

I may check the Greek for the verse, because I know that, even words like “faith” and “confess” had heavier connotations in ancient Rome than they do today.

You’re right that we must be careful. We don’t want to offend the Spirit, but with so much deception, we don’t want to be found as idolaters or sorcerers either… Otherwise, our faith would be in vain.

Yet throughout all this, my greatest peace is that the Shepherd said He would not lose His sheep in the Bible. I trust Him.

            • sherry

a mystery is just that, a mystery, which means there may no be an interpretation.

              only god knows.

so, if only god knows the interpretation, the interpretation is protected from invasion or corruption by satan..

              • The problem with this interpretation is, it suddenly switches from xenoglossia to the babbling type of glossolalia. It’s not really consistent with the rest of Scripture on tongues. Acts’ cases were mostly for evangelising and as a sign to the Jews, or to verify an apostle. If 1 Corinthians 12’s test requires more context and deeper meaning than what is thought at face value, then it’s not wrong to say chapter 14 may also require further study and context. It is possible that, Paul was referring to a congregational context, as throughout the letter; where the speaker who does not understand without interpretation, is speaking in his spirit mysteries unto God. Otherwise, why write the verses from 1 Cor 14: 9-13? To say it’s a protected language may be to add to Scripture which is not very explicit in meaning, like the case of chapter 12’s test ( oh, and I checked the Greek… It’s the same meaning as English. ) Furthermore, protected prayer or not, our Sovereign God cannot have His will interrupted by the enemy, since the enemy is also subject to the Father and Christ. We are explicitly told this in Isaiah, Job and all throughout Scripture. So a protected language in light of that makes…. Little sense in regards to His nature??

On the other hand, Acts does say the disciples spoke “as the Spirit gave utterance,” and the Corinthians’ epistles does say “he who speaks in a tongue edifies himself.” So it’s not wrong to say that, the Spirit will guide our spirits into praying in accordance with God’s will and however He wants us to speak or behave… Although it may be a mystery to us. In fact, I recall instances in my life and my mother’s life when this was so. And when doing research, I also found an account of a woman praying in tongues ( which she said tended to sound like it’d rotate in languages and dialects ), for healing for someone, and a man who overheard came and told her she was speaking a French dialect. Another account of another woman records her saying God gave her some mix of languages in her home when she was seeking Him alone ( not for tongues; she didn’t expect them ), which she found distinct from a Pentecostal church’s tongues she was surrounded with ( hers tended to sound like full sentences, rather than babbling sounds ).

Perhaps it is right to say anything by the Spirit is a “language” by the Spirit… But as for this doctrine of a protected language, I think, as like any other, should be open for healthy, respectful debate.

Oh, and thank you for up with me, Marianne. I pray the Spirit will open our minds to the truth! Amen.

                • sherry

the term “protected” is an assumption or interpretation.

there is a reason why the tongues is spoken as a mystery.

that is just one way of reasoning why it is so.

I pray in tongues and do not normally understand anything I say.

then rarely I say something that , to me, is obvious in meaning…but others do not hear it

for example, I might hear myself say “shalom” but no one else does.

why am I the only one who hears this word?

I dont know but I continue to pray anyhow.

maybe it was just for me to hear

                  • Yes, Marianne, I agree with you there. I think sometimes God keeps things as a mystery for us because… Perhaps He knows that, certain things which the Spirit prays for, we cannot accept or understand until the time He reveals to us, though the verbal or written communication appears clear. Like how the unbelieving Jews did not accept the “mystery” of Christ, despite Him saying plainly in their language He is the Messiah. Thus the Spirit’s prayers are protected in that way, from us and the enemy. But I think saying “protected prayer language” implies God created an entire new language of babbling just to confuse the devil… Which He need not do, and probably has not done at all. Plus, the doctrine using this term has sparked so much division and confusion, to the point of both cessationists and continuationists warping Scripture and accusing each other harshly for their own biased arguments… So we see the fruits of that.

I think it is good to say our prayers are “protected” or “mysterious” to us and the enemy in the way you’ve presented the terms in your comment… Yet perhaps without the implication of an entirely new babble language which would cause all kinds of fraud and confusion to show up? Our God, after all, is a God of truth and order.

  48. The picture is faked and photoshopped. Supposedly many people have come forward to claim that they are the ones that have taken this photo in Africa, including James Goll claiming his Wife Michal Ann Goll who is now dead, took this photo.
    It’s faked.

  49. I believe what the article says. I started praying in tongues one afternoon, I came home from work and I was fed up with the fact that I had prayed requesting the ability to pray in tongues for more than two years and my prayer was not yet answered. So I talked to God, no, I was actually yelling and I demanded He bless me, I quoted scriptures that supported my demands, then I started to praise, not in song, but I told God who He is , his sovereignty and all that. I was alone at home, round about 5 pm. Suddenly, I could not talk anymore, my words did not have meaning, I just let go, I continued talking what I did not understand, when I opened my eyes, it was the next morning about 6am, but it felt like 20 minutes. Even today I can’t explain what happened, I did not see anything, I did not feel anything, I was not even tired. I continued praying in tongues till today. What I have noticed is that every word every sentence is different, I will not stop praying until I stop myself, but in some occasions I am unable to stop myself and if that happens, I let go because I believe I may be praying for a serious situation or for someone I don’t even know. I simply don’t understand what I am saying in tongues but it does not bother me. Most of the time I start to pray unconsciously while doing something else and have to record of when did I actually start to pray. Sometimes I would even wake up praying in tongues. There is this one song though, that I sing in tongues, the song is the same everytime, I just wonder what it means. Praying in tongues is real and very powerful.
