Dagon falls down

Dagon is an ancient pagan god of prosperity. The “god of gods.”

1 Samuel 5:1-6

And the Philistines took the Ark of God from Ebenezer onto Ashdod.

*** Ebenezer means Stone of help. The reference comes from Samuel 7 where Samuel declares that spot where Yahweh God delivered the Israelites from the Philistines.

**** biblical meaning of Ashdod is diffusion, inclination and Theft.

Then the Philistines took the Ark of God they brought it into the house of Dagon and set it by Dagon

And when the people of that shod arose early in the morning, there was Dagon, falling on its face to the Earth before the Ark of the Lord. So they took Dagon and set it in its place again

*** note. Dagon is forced to bow before the true Lord of Lords.

And when they a rose early and the next morning, there was Dagon, falling on its face to the ground before the Ark of the Lord. The head of Dagon and both the palms of its hands were broken off on the threshold. Only Dagon’s torso was left of it

*** note. The head is gone which represented his authority. And the palms are gone and broken so he can no longer take or receive or give.

Therefore neither the priest of Dagon nor anyone who come into Dagon’s house tread on the threshold of Dagon in Ashdod to this day

But the hand of the Lord was heavy on the people of the Ashdod and he ravaged them and struck them with tumors, both Ashdod and its territory.

***  tumors or hemorrhoids.

ṭᵉchôr, tekh-ore’; from an unused root meaning to burn; a boil or ulcer (from the inflammation), especially a tumor in the anus or pudenda (the piles):—emerod.

In  separate accounts in Samuel, it also says there were mice problems.

So Yahweh God ordered gold replicas of not only the mice but the hemorrhoids tumors.

They were to be offered as guilt offerings to the Lord.

In this sense, I think the Lord has a sense of humor.

He is rubbing it in their faces what they did wrong.

Plus he’s making them use up their gold from the “prosperity god” to do this. So he’s making fun of Dagon..

Yahweh has also decided that since they want graven images, He will make them regret it.

After they had taken it away, the hand of theLORD was against the city, creating a very great panic;and He struck the people of the city, from the young to the old, so that tumors broke out on them.  1 Sam 5:12

And the people who did not die were struck with tumors, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven.  1 Sam 5:12

Then they said, “What is to be theguilt offeringthat we shall return to Him?” And they said,“Five gold tumors and five gold mice corresponding to the number of the governors of the Philistines, since one plague was on all of[fn]you and on your governors.   1 Sam 6:4

“So you shall make likenesses of your tumors and likenesses of your mice that are ruining the land, and you shall give glory to the God of Israel; perhaps He will lighten His hand from you, your gods, and your land.   1 Sam 6:5

And they put the ark of the LORD on the cart, and the saddlebag with the gold mice and the likenesses of their tumorsH2914.   1 Sam 6:11

Now these are the gold tumorsH2914which the Philistines returned as a guilt offering to the LORD: one for Ashdod, one for Gaza, one for Ashkelon, one for Gath, and one for Ekron;  1 Sam 6:17

Thoughts

While this account includes some humor, it also is the truth.

When we are faced with multiple problems, we have to know that Yahweh God, the Lord of Heaven and Earth, is always in control.

And when we are foolish enough to bring in our own Pagan idols into our lives, Yahweh God has a way of bringing them down before us.

This is to help wake us up as to our guilt and our failings.

What we should do is want the truth to begin with, and cast out our Pagan idols on our own accord.

And if we don’t do this, Yahweh God will do it for us.

And we should not mourn this loss but rejoice in it.

  1. Thank you Marianne. This was a good reminder of symbolism in Scripture provides color commentary.

  2. The message adds a visualization and color I’ve never had before- nor seen- when reading about the account of dagon. Thank you.

It also includes an ‘essential piece’ – that is fundamental to every believer in God, that takes them from the majority type Class B- superficial believer in God who has not had a supernatural encounter or has but is blind and does not recognize them.

    To a

Class A- believer- who has witnessed firsthand for themselves Miracles of God. Lived them & Seen Them.

So many ask- ‘why is an encounter or a supernatural experience necessary in order to believe in God? The bible doesn’t say that!

“I believe! I know! The bible says we must have faith, and i have faith and I believe! ”

They say this because they do not have a supernatural encounter, or a testimony, that has convinced them beyond being a Class B type of believer.

Accounts like this- He struck the people of the city, from the young to the old, so that tumors broke out on them. Or the plagues, MAKE BELIEVERS OUT OF PEOPLE. And yes, it is absolutely necessary to have a supernatural encounter with CHRIST, in order to believe in God.

    Thanks Marianne, God bless you.
