Zechariah Names the Messiah?

Has the Branch come before, and will come again?

Written for a Jewish audience.

Moses changed Joshua’s name from Hosea to Yehoshu’a Numbers 13:16

“Joshua” in scriptures below is Yehoshu’a.

The past repeats in the future

What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done; there is nothing new under the sun.

Is there a thing of which it is said, ‘See, this is new’? It has already been, in the ages before us.

Ecclesiastes 1:9-10

Zechariah identifies the Branch

Zech 3- Angel of the Lord talking to Zechariah

1. And he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the LORD, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

2 And the LORD said unto Satan, The LORD rebuke thee, O Satan; even the LORD that hath chosen Jerusalem rebuke thee: is not this a brand plucked out of the fire?

3 Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments, and stood before the angel.

4 And he answered and spoke unto those that stood before him, saying, Take away the filthy garments from him. And unto him he said, Behold, I have caused your iniquity to pass from thee, and I will clothe thee with change of raiment.

5 And I said, Let them set a fair crown upon his head. So they set a fair crown upon his head, and clothed him with garments. And the angel of the LORD stood by.

6 And the angel of the LORD protested unto Joshua, saying,

7 Thus says the LORD of hosts; If thou wilt walk in my ways, and if thou wilt keep my charge, then thou shalt also judge my house, and shalt also keep my courts, and I will give thee places to walk among these that stand by.

8 Hear now, O Joshua the high priest, thou, and thy fellows that sit before thee: for they are men wondered at: for, behold, I will bring forth my servant the BRANCH.

**note: Here, it sounds like the angel is just discussing the Branch with Joshua.

9 For behold the stone that I have laid before Joshua; upon one stone shall be seven eyes: behold, I will engrave the graving thereof, says the LORD of hosts, and I will remove the iniquity of that land in one day.

10 In that day, says the LORD of hosts, shall ye call every man his neighbor under the vine and under the fig tree.

Zech 6- Angel of the Lord continues talking to Zechariah

11 Then take silver and gold, and make an elaborate crown, and set it upon the head of Joshua the son of Josedech, the high priest;

12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaks the Lord of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the Lord:

**Note: now, it seems the Lord is referring directly to and about Joshua as the Branch

13 Even he shall build the temple of the Lord; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both.

Is it possible that the Branch / Messiah has come already as Joshua, and maybe other historic figures as well, been battle tested, and will return again for the final battle?

  1. […] here for […]

  2. Clearly Joshua is a ‘type’ as some schools of thought call it. But what type does he represent? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joshua_the_High_Priest I take encouragement that he represents the priestly one who left Babylon to start something new and found themselves building again the Temple and Kingdom of God. I live in UK and see the modern day Babylon as the remnant of Rome that killed the Christians and since those days has lived in luxury – the EU. So I yearn to obey Rev 18 by Brexit (not the only way to obey it but a significant one it seems to me) and so to then find the Temple Architect Yeshu lets us be fellow builders with Him of the Kingdom of God Temple built by the Holy Spirit not merely human hands – this would be just fine!

  3. Clearly it also symbolises baptism. Leaving Babylon, being dirty but getting made clean with putting off of Babylon comtamination and angels helping. Then being given royal status as one of the believers in the Body of Yeshu. And actively working as God gives tasks to do which build the Temple which is Yeshu’s Body.

  4. The same kind of metaphor is seen with the Woman and man child sign in Revelation withh The Dragon standing by to try to grab the child when it is born. This associates baptism and new birth.

  5. The visions of Zechariah are the most difficult to interpret in the Bible. In this instance there appears to be some word play, typical for Semitics, on the name “Joshua.”

The exaltation of Joshua (meaning “salvation of Yahweh) as a high priest is a foreshadowing, and an implicit indication, of the superiority of the coming Melchizedek priesthood to the Levitical priesthood. True salvation will come through Joshua, the actual name of Christ, who will also be the high priest of the Melchizedek order. The seven eyes of the stone are the seven spirits of God (Rev 5:6) .

The branch is Christ, who is a branch off the tree trunk of God the Father. It is only Christ who sits on the throne as both ruler and priest. The counsel of peace shall be between his two functions as king and priest. He also will build up the temple (an additional interpretation of Matt 26: 61, where the three days are three thousands years before Ezekiel’s temple is built).

The King James version of verse 6:11 has the plural “crowns” rather than the singular “crown.” Only Christ has many crowns (Rev 19:12). Iniquity will be removed in one day at the second coming of Christ (Isa 66:7-8).

    • I cannot see how someone with filthy robes implying sinfulness could be a prophetic representation of the Messiah.

      • stephen

we are not told why they robes are filthy. kind david was also told he was unclean as he had blood on his hands from many battles.

that is why his son solomon was chosen to build the temple instead of him.

the same may apply to joshua, as he was a warrior as well.

joshua was described in scripture as an honorable man, so this may NOT refer to his personal sins.

there is also generational iniquity, which is not our sin, but the sins of ancestors, who did not repent, and we have to make amends for what they did to be clean. if not , we wear filthy rags due to ancestors.

    • I saw what the King James version said but when I went back to the Hebrew the Hebrew word was singular

      • I know this is off topic but what are the festivals of Baal mentioned in Hosea 2:14? I know that some people do not celebrate Christmas anymore, so is Christmas, Easter, the festivals of Baal? And maybe we should not be calling God LORD??

        • blue lotus

Lord is a title, just like mister or madam.

so the word lord is not evil…it is just a word

in Israel, a man is called lord as he is ruler over his home. so instead of “mister smith,” he is called adon (lord) smith.

the british tradition does this also, there are lords and ladies….the Parliament members are called lords, and this has nothing to do with religion.

          • I do not know the festivals of baal…but they did back then.

            • Okay, thank you. I still feel that we should not refer to Him as Lord but as Husband. No one can take the place of JHVH as our husband telling us what to do.

Here is a very good teaching video that explains in Zecheriah 14:9 that God’s name shall be One.

              Joshua= God is our salvation
              Jehovah=self-existent one or I AM

              Put together-“I am Your salvation”

  6. maybe baal festivals are birthday celebrations??

  7. And I will visit upon her the days of Baalim, wherein she burned incense to them, and she decked herself with her earrings and her jewels, and she went after her lovers, and forgat me, saith the LORD. HOsea 2: 13

The candles are incense to the Baals probably…Wow, God is holy.

  8. I do not know but in my opinion according to the books of Krishna cociousness Jeshua is going to be next New Adam. I think he is going to be Prophet Isa maybe 2020- and Vyasadeva 2100- . And this Prophet Isa is perhaps New Adam because he is going to have a family. But is he going to be the BRANCH I doubt a little bit. According to the Revelation he is of course the BRANCH but how about if that BRANCH is going to be one of the Prophet ISAs children?? Well that does not make much sense because of what Revelation says. My opinion is that Prophet ISA is New Adam and out of him and his family comes all other forms of Jeshua. Sorry if this is not correct and I do not want to confuse Israel but just trying to find the Absolute Truth about things that will happen this Milleneum.

  9. Thanks for the teaching and the Lord bless it.
