Blessed and Not Blessed

clip_image002

What is the real recipe for blessing?

Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take

or sit in the company of mockers,

but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,
and who meditates on his law day and night
.

That person is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither—
whatever they do prospers. Psalm 1: 1-3

There are two types of blessings: spiritual and temporal/material

(1)

In the sermon on the Mount, Jesus discusses the spiritual ones Matt 5: 1-12

Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to Him,2and He began to teach them, saying:

3  Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4  Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

5  Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.

6  Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness,

for they will be filled.

7  Blessed are the merciful, for they shall be shown mercy.

8  Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.

9  Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called the sons of God.

10  Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11  Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.

12  Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

(2)

Deuteronmy 28 discusses the blessings that come with obedience to God:

Blessings for Obedience

28 If you fully obey the Lord your God and carefully follow all his commands I give you today, the Lord your God will set you high above all the nations on earth.

2 All these blessings will come on you and accompany you if you obey the Lord your God:

3 You will be blessed in the city and blessed in the country.

4 The fruit of your womb will be blessed, and the crops of your land and the young of your livestock—the calves of your herds and the lambs of your flocks.

5 Your basket and your kneading trough will be blessed.

6 You will be blessed when you come in and blessed when you go out.

7 The Lord will grant that the enemies who rise up against you will be defeated before you. They will come at you from one direction but flee from you in seven.

8 The Lord will send a blessing on your barns and on everything you put your hand to. The Lord your God will bless you in the land he is giving you.

9 The Lord will establish you as his holy people, as he promised you on oath, if you keep the commands of the Lord your God and walk in obedience to him.

10 Then all the peoples on earth will see that you are called by the name of the Lord, and they will fear you.

11 The Lord will grant you abundant prosperity—in the fruit of your womb, the young of your livestock and the crops of your ground—in the land he swore to your ancestors to give you.

12 The Lord will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.

13 The Lord will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the Lord your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.

14 Do not turn aside from any of the commands I give you today, to the right or to the left, following other gods and serving them.

Categories of blessed / not blessed people:

1. Godless and blessed, as one is worldly and fits into worldly environments

2. Godless and not blessed

3. Faithful and blessed spiritually, but do not prosper in a material way

4. Faithful and blessed materially, but not spiritually

5. Faithful and not blessed at all

For believers, being faithful and blessed both spiritually and materially is ideal.

But there are people who consider themselves faithful, but not “blessed.”

So, why are some faithful and blessed and others not blessed?

Faithful and blessed

1. Obedient to Word of God

2. Not obedient to Word of God, but fit into the world system, which accepts and promotes them. (In this case, they are not as faithful as they think they are.)

Faithful and spiritually blessed, but does not prosper

Obedient to Word of God, in a partial way, due to partial acceptance of the Word.

Faithful and not blessed

1.  Not obedient to Word of God, and do not fit into world system

2.  Curses coming in from spiritual attacks. (different topic)

clip_image006

How can one be partially obedient to the Word of God?

1. ignorance of the Word

2. selective obedience to the Word.

Selective obedience

Selective obedience usually occurs due to the belief system that Grace replaces all the law.

It is true that we are saved by grace alone, and not works.

The assumption is that ALL the law is replaced by grace and faith, and so one can neglect or omit obedience to most of the Torah commandments, and live by faith alone.

Obeying God’s commandments is seen as being “under the law.”

clip_image008

Why have law?

The Purpose of the Law

Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. Galatians 3:24-25

But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. Gal 5:18

clip_image010

POINT

You can obey the law without being “under the law.”

Being under the law implies a burden.

One can obey without feeling burdened. In fact, the Torah commandments were meant to offer protection and freedom to those who obeyed them.

It can be a joy, NOT a burden, to obey God.

If you are led by the Spirit, you are not “under” the law, but you will still seek and desire to obey it, because it reflects God’s will, and obedience results in His protection and blessings.

clip_image012

Works vs. Obedience

Salivation by Works assumes that one’s own merits can stand alone, and merit heaven.

The kind of works may or may not be related to adhering to Torah commandments.

Example: One may also decide on performing certain duties or tasks in order to merit favor with God, such as working for the church, or writing books on bible topics.

Obedience has nothing to do with achieving salvation. It is a result of salvation. A saved soul will hate sin. The desire to obey God will be there, and the thought of offending God in any way would be repugnant to him.

Obedience is possible only when one knows what is to be obeyed, that is, one must know God’s will first (Torah) before one can strive to obey it, with the help of the Holy Spirit.

You cannot obey if you are ignorant.

While some believe that the Holy spirit automatically drops the entire will of God into someone’s brain when they get saved, He doesn’t.

What He does do is infuse the DESIRE to know the will of God and the DESIRE to read and obey the Word of God.

If the person follows the leading of the Holy Spirit, then he will become informed, and better able to obey God with an earnest heart.

clip_image014

The law as obsolete or passed away

What law has been done away with ? Answer is, the sacrificial laws for sin:

Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin Heb 10:18

Scripture does not support the dismissal of ALL commandments…it only indicates that the need for sacrifices have been replaced with the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross.

clip_image016

“Sacrifice for sins” has been nailed to the cross.

Other commandments have not BEEN nailed to the cross, and we still have to obey them.

We still have to keep the Sabbath, honor our parents, not cheat, steal or commit adultery. We still are not to covet our neighbor’s possessions.

We still have to tell the truth, and pay restitution to others, when we damage their goods, and feed the poor.

We still have to observe cleanliness, avoid contaminated meats, and pray and give thanks for what God has given us.

clip_image018

Summary

How much we are blessed is up to us.

We can sin, or avoid it.

We can believe, or disbelieve.

We can obey, or not obey.

Blessings are both spiritual and physical.

We can have both kinds of blessings, or just one kind.

We should not limit ourselves.

Being under grace should free ourselves to learn all about the law, and delight in it.

And then whatever we do will prosper.

  2. Dear Marianne
very encouraging and uplifting ,you’ve put a lot of love and effort
    into this wonderful article
Lords blessing upon you and all that come here to find some
    comfort

  3. Jesus walked with sinners. The scripture at the beginning suggested not walking with sinners if you want to be blessed. Some people find it necessary to be in the company of unbelievers, even scoffers, because these are in their own families. The Lord would not want us to abandon those for whom we have some responsibility, and some opportunity to change. It’s hard, and indeed it feels unblessed at times. Jesus, too, hurt because he was in the company of sinners often. He did not walk away from them, even if he instructed the disciples to shake off the dust of the homes in which they were not received. But when the home where you are not received is your own home, then what? Jesus probably would expect us to persevere even if it means losing some of our material blessings. Perhaps we do not lose out spiritual blessings if we can tolerate the situation.

    • mariel

the passage means that we do not walk in agreement with them….it is one thing to be around sinners, which is inevitable, since they are everywhere…but it is another thing to become one with them, and participate in what they do

  4. Woah. My pastor just gave a sermon on “Law vs Grace, under grace, under law?” God does this pretty often when it’s a season for me to learn.

The hyper grace teaching is making exceeding headways in christiandom , especially by a particular pastor in my country, who is getting really popular in the US too.

    Spot on! Thanks for sharing.

  5. I think that being blessed is finding happiness and contentment in life knowing that you have done the right thing and have showed love and concern for people even though you have not received it back. By doing the right thing generally you are rewarded in material and spiritual things. My grandfather said “you make your bed when you are young and you got to lie on it when you get older” – other words what you do when you are young effects you when you get older and that has a lot of truth in it. How you look after yourself and treat others effects your life when you get older.

  6. Marianne, about mid way you wrote: “For believers, being faithful and blessed both spiritually and materially is ideal. But there are people who consider themselves faithful, but not “blessed.” – So, why are some faithful and blessed and others not blessed?

” … people who consider themselves faithful, but not ‘blessed’.” I believe it is possible that some who are faithful, but do not feel blessed, are indeed blessed.

Is it not possible there are times we are blessed but, for what ever reason, are not aware of the presence of the blessings upon us? We just have not come into an awareness of the blessings? That we have yet to grow into a full understanding of our situation or circumstances, the “gift” presented to us?

    I believe this also happens.

    • hi denise

it is true that many do not realize how blessed they are, due to burdens and problems in their lives….

i was referring to those who really are not blessed because of things they are overlooking….

we should all thank God for what we do have, and ask him to reveal to us other ways he is blessing us, to open our eyes to what he is doing for us..

this way we can glorify him even more!

  7. I thought this was beautifully written. may I copy (just the words, not the pics) for easy reading beside me?

  8. I just finished a thought study and this is so enlightening!!!!
mine was on purity does not equal being deprived, but being honored…. You seem to always be right there when He needs to sum up my endless quests:)

  9. We all need to do our individual and assigned task given to us from the Lord and most importantly avoid all the so called prophecy from the Christians who predict the end of America or the collapse of the American economy, the four blood moons, the peanut butter and jelly moons, etc, etc, the Satan visions that most all of the so called Christians have placed on the internet, all bullshit, nothing is from God it is all from Satan. Stop following Satan and follow the Lord. Respectfully Jim Elsea.

  10. I also know of an additional form of blessing that has been a massive part of my Christian experience – where does one stand with respect to Israel and the Jewish people? If anyone is anti-semitic in practice, or in the heart, and/or thinks that Yahweh has replaced the Jews with the Gentile Church (Replacement Theology), then that person, church, or congregation, will be blinded spiritually to the truths concerning Israel, prophecy, and the Bible in general, especially concerning the last-days. If the anti-semitic person/ group/nation are not believers in Yeshua, then that person/group/nation will be cursed and judged. This was promised to Abraham and his descendants in Genesis 12:3 and has never been revoked.

My husband and I have been tremendously blessed spiritually because of our heart for Israel and the Jewish people, and our willingness to study Israel and Jewish centered teachings from the ‘creme de la creme’ of Messianic Jewish scholars such as Dr. Arnold Fruchtenbaum and Jacob Prasch. I have also studied Dr. Frank Seekins teachings, a Jewish scholar, on the Hebrew Word Pictures, and taught them to my 4 children in our home school, and since developed an online ‘Foundational Hebrew’ course based on my own research using the word pictures, which is found at http://foundationalhebrew.weebly.com.

My intense research based on the Jewish-centered teachings and the word pictures lead to a 2-part series “Sealed Till the Time of the End” which revealed amazing, ground breaking details about 666, the plot for Revelation 13, the Mark and name of the beast, and the timing for the events of the Great Tribulation including Yeshua’s return, and so much more. I even do a study on the coming blood red moons, the first is due Passover (April 16) this year – which by the way marks the beginning of Daniel’s 70th Week (Daniel 9:27). The passion that developed in these last-days prophetic areas steered my research into uncharted territory, from a biblical and Hebrew perspective, yet complimented the teachings of Is…. expositor, Walid Shoebat. http://www.deborahjeanstearn.com.

Amazingly, I also discovered through the research that I have Jewish ancestry, was born on the Jewish Feast of Shavuot (Pentacost), AND was born again on Passover – which I am extremely proud of and humbled by.

  11. Marienne,

    Excellent page.

These are two prayers, seeking blessings – one physical and the other spiritual.

“Now Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, ‘Oh that You would bless me indeed and enlarge my border, and that Your hand might be with me, and that You would keep me from harm that it may not pain me!’ And God granted him what he requested” (1 Chron 4:10).

“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God” (Philippians 1:9-11, NKJV).

    Blessings
    Psalm 20

  12. Those who are in Christ are no longer under the Law of Moses, whatsoever, for we are under a completely new covenant. We follow Christ and are led by the Spirit of God. When you put yourself under the Law to obey it, it brings wrath and that because you are bound to the entire law, not just slivers of it. Once you break just one of the laws, you have broken the entire law.

Just as in marriage, as long as either party is alive they are committed by law to that marriage. But once either the husband or wife dies, the other is released from the commitment of that covenant of marriage. In the same way, we died to the law of Moses and are under a completely new covenant, whereby we are led by the Spirit. The best way to understand this is that, any time anyone is dependent on keeping or performing something as a means for salvation, then that person is attempting to obtain salvation by their own efforts. Does this mean that we should not do good works? Of course not! But we do not do them to obtain salvation, but to glorify God and to build up our treasures in heaven.

Salvation has already been fully obtained for us by the shed blood of Christ and he’s not sharing the spotlight! The power of death is sin and the law is what gives sin its power. This is why Scripture states that Christ defeated the powers of darkness through death on the cross, ergo, he disarmed the powers of darkness by meeting the righteous requirements of the law, fulfilling them completely and then nailed them to the cross as completed. The law was ammunition for the powers of darkness, which Christ took away by meeting the laws requirements on our behalf.

When someone asks us how we are saved, the only answer should be, by faith in the shed blood of Christ. We need to forget about the law and follow Christ, for that old covenant has been replaced. When we are attempting to walk as Christ walked, then we will not seek to satisfy the desires of the sinful nature. But if we fall, then we have One who is sitting at the right hand of the Father who speaks on our behalf and if we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

If we are trusting in anything other than the shed blood of Christ to obtain salvation it will have the opposite affect, keeping us from eternal life and that because we did not trust that his sacrifice was enough.

The commands of God are as follows:

And this is his command: to believe in the name of his Son, Jesus Christ, and to love one another as he commanded us. (1 John 3:23)

Here is the answer that Peter and the other apostles gave in answer to the question of whether or not believers should be circumcised and made to obey the law of Moses:

“After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: “Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us. He did not discriminate between us and them, for he purified their hearts by faith. Now then, why do you try to test God by putting on the necks of Gentiles a yoke that neither we nor our ancestors have been able to bear? No! We believe it is through the grace of our Lord Jesus that we are saved, just as they are.”

Let the Law of Moses go and set your hopes on Christ, which is who the law and the prophets were pointing to.

    • dmcal

we are not under the law, just because we obey God.

we do not trust in works or the law to save us.

we trust in the blood of jesus for our salvation.

when we are led by the spirit , the burden is light, not heavy, and obedience easy, and motivated by love….

      read the post again

  13. All who have not come to the (spiritual age) of accountability. have fallen short of what earth has to offer and by default are covered. Those who have reached the age of accountability may or may not be covered (it’s a yes or no question)

  14. In Ezekiel, after the building of the Third ( actually the 4th ) Temple the sacrifices will once again be placed into operation. The laws are a burden? Today, Kohen and Levite temple service laws can not be performed. But many of the remaining laws, civil and criminal, are practiced by people in everyday life, not as a burden, but as societal necessity.

    • true

people forget that common civil law, which protects our rights and freedom, is based on the 10 commandments.

in case they forget, an example is “you shall not murder (kill)” or “you shall not bear bear false witness”

to protest obeying God is to also protest these laws which protect society

  15. You see…it is all about choices! Matthew 5:1-12 is one of my favorite. When I am down, or need encouragement, looking upon these verses give me encouragements. 🙂

  16. The last time I can remember something materlializing was with Noah and the flood. He was rightful in the sight of the lord (spiritual) and the lord had him materlialze a boat and board every animal. then as if it can almost be seen from the heavens. The boat rides above the massive flood and they are holy (apart) from the rest. Afterwards. it is them

  17. Steven,

Yes. We know that this next time it is by fire. So where is the ark? Seems to me it is faith in Christ, especially when I read a few Psalms, regarding the protection of The Lord.

I think there is something to learn within Matthew 25:1-10. Who remained within the house and who went out?

Then, I found this verse very interesting – from the prophet Isaiah:

“Come, my people, enter your chambers,
    And shut your doors behind you;
Hide yourself, as it were, for a little moment,
Until the indignation is past” (NKJV).
