Cup and final baptism of Jesus

The cup of suffering – either from punishment or from persecution- is waiting for all of us.

The first baptism of Jesus was by water. The second baptism of Jesus was by spirit.

The last baptism of Jesus was suffering and death.

Mat 20:22 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.

Mar 10:38 But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?

Luk 22:20 Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup [is] the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

Many think of the abundant life that Jesus offered was to come without any cost. That it was free, since Jesus died for us.

But this is not what Jesus indicated.

The abundant life is not here on earth. It is in the next life, or after Jesus returns.

The abundant life is not a materialistic one. No flashy cars, or dress, no big houses or bank accounts.

The kingdom of God is the kingdom of heaven. It is spirit and eternal, and not a physical entitlement system.

While some want to use Old Testament prosperity to justify their prosperous lifestyles, we must remember that Jesus came to clarify what prosperity really meant.

Even those in the Old Testament suffered loss of some sort for what they received, and their faith was tested in many ways.

There is no “blab it and grab it” anywhere in scripture.

Jesus came to set an example. While only He could die for anyone’s sins, we are to pick up the cross of self denial, and humility, and be ready to suffer for our faith.

1Cr 11:25 After the same manner also [he took] the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink [it], in remembrance of me.

Mat 20:23 And he said unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but [it shall be given to them] for whom it is prepared of my Father.

Mat 26:42 He went away again the second time, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if this cup may not pass away from me, except I drink it, thy will be done.

Every apostle of Jesus suffered and died for their faith.

ApostlesFate

They were all crucified, or killed in another way, except John, who died in prison.

They all drank from the cup of persecution, and received the baptism by death:

1. John the Baptist – beheaded by Herod while Jesus was still alive

2. Simon Peter – executed around AD64 during the persecutions of Emperor Nero, or later in AD67. Apparently he was crucified, head-down, at his own request.

3. Andrew – crucified at Patras in Achaia

4. James, son of Zebedee – beheaded by Herod Agrippa I, King of the Jews, in c AD44

5. Philip – martyred at Hieropolis, Turkey.

6. Bartholomew – met his death by being flayed or skinned alive, and then beheaded.

7. Thomas – speared to death near Madras on the east coast of India

8. Mathew – martyrdom in Ethiopia or Persia

9. James, son of Alphaeus – martyrdom in Egypt

10. Jude – killed with Simon the Zealot in Persia

11. Simon the Zealot – crucified or hacked to death in Persia

12. Matthias – may have preached and been martyred in Ethiopia, Other traditions place him in Judea, and later Cappadocia (eastern Turkey) and the Caspian Sea area.

13. Paul or Saul of Tarsus – beheaded at a place now called Tre Fontane in Rome

14. John – died in prison on the Isle of Patmos

God, in his mercy, may spare some from persecution and death. But it is our hearts and willingness to suffer these things that God will judge us by.

Either we are willing to drink from the cup of persecution, and be baptized with the baptism of death, if that comes our way, or we are to drink from the cup of the wrath of God.

The cup of wrath for faithlessness, and disobedience:

Old Testament

Isa 51:17 Awake, awake, stand up, O Jerusalem, which hast drunk at the hand of the LORD the cup of his fury; thou hast drunken the dregs of the cup of trembling, [and] wrung [them] out.

Isa 51:22 Thus says thy Lord the LORD, and thy God [that] pleads the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of your hand the cup of trembling, [even] the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shall no more drink it again:

Jer 25:28 And it shall be, if they refuse to take the cup at your hand to drink, then shall thou say unto them, Thus says the LORD of hosts; Ye shall certainly drink.

Jer 49:12 For thus says the LORD; Behold, they whose judgment [was] not to drink of the cup have assuredly drunken; and [art] thou he [that] shall altogether go unpunished? thou shall not go unpunished, but thou shall surely drink [of it].

New Testament

Rev 14:10 The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb:

Rev 16:19 And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath.

Note:

It is natural and human to avoid suffering. Suffering hurts.

Even Jesus asked His Father if his cup could be taken away.

My first response to this very serious issue is to escape, or “cop out,” and just be a minimal Christian…… thinking I do not need a special crown for martyrdom.

I can think that as long as I slide by as born again, I will just be glad to make it to heaven.

But what we fear most is what comes upon us.

This is a fallen world due to sin.

We either join the fallen, and continue in sin, or we reject sin, and face the opposition of the fallen world.

Christians, world wide, are suffering horrible things for their faith.

Why should others go untested?

We all are going to be tested, in some way.

God is not a respecter of persons. No one gets special treatment.

Even Jesus suffered, and was tested, and no one is better than Him.

I really pray that I am up to this.

May God give me the grace to go through testing, and show Him my love.

  2. As to Rev 14:10 – The terrible cup of wrath of Revelation – no one had to drink it except Yeshua, until this last times.

See interesting observation by a 7th day Sabbatarian atwww.whitehorsemedia.com/products/details.cfm?prod=20 Take this cup from me!

BTW Eugene Peterson often renders ‘cup’ as ‘chalice’ in his pseudo-bible “Message”. Is he somehow from Catholic tradition?

  4. Hey Marianne, another great post! I am reminded of a movie I saw years ago, “judgement” with Corbin Bernsen and Mr T. Corbin plays a defense atty to defend and save the life of a woman who has refused the mark. The trial is the AC versus G-D.
In the closing arguement, the attorney argues -paraphrase-“who of you here is willing to lay down you life for this man (AC)…he walks over to the AC and says, “this man is certainly not going to die for you”, and none of you here are willing to die for him…but Christ, He died for ALL of US and those who know and love HIM are willing to give their lives for HIM!” The atty pointed out that everyone’s heart had grown cold since receiving the Mark-there was no more love. This fits the scripture of Matthew 24:12 “12Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold, 13but he who stands firm to the end will be saved…

Most of us were raised during the times when life was easy as we went to church every sunday, out to lunch with friends afterwards etc…sunday school, vacation bible school etc…we have heard the stories of Noahs’ Ark, Jonah and the Whale…Jesus’ birth, death and resurrection…we believe the Bible…right? Either we do or we don’t. It is NOW the TIME to “draw the line” per se in the sand and decide which side of it we are going to stand. I honestly don’t see us going past 10 years! We have to make that committment to our KING…as He died for us, are we willing to DIE FOR HIM. The young girl at Columbine did! One of the teenage boys who was terrozing everyone (mostly jews and christians) stood in front of her with his rifle pointed at her and demanded to know if she was a Christian. KNOWING she would die if she answered yes, she answered truthfully-YES- and he shot her! Michael W Smith heard of what had transpired in that library (I believe it was the library where this happened) and he wrote a song on her behalf and while attending her furneral, he sang the song..I will post the words below.

  5. It was a test we could all hope to pass
But none of us would want to take.
Faced with the choice to deny God to live,
For her, there was one choice to make.

This was her time. this was her dance.
She lived every moment; left nothing to chance.
    She swam in the sea; drank of the deep;
Embraced the mystery of all she could be.

    This was her time…

Though you are mourning and grieving with us,
    Death died a long time ago;
Swallowed in life so that life carries on.
Still it’s so hard to let go.

This was her time. this was her dance.
She lived every moment; left nothing to chance.
    She swam in the sea; drank of the deep;
Embraced the mystery of all she could be.

What if tomorrow, and what if today,
    Faced with the question,
    Oh what would you say?

This is your time. this is your dance.
Live every moment. leave nothing to chance.
Swim in the sea. drink of the deep.
Follow the mercy and hear yourself praying.

    Won’t you save me?
    Won’t you save me?

This is your time. this is your dance.
Live every moment. leave nothing to chance.
Swim in the sea. drink of the deep.
Embrace the mystery of all you can be.

This is your time. this is your dance.
Live every moment. leave nothing to chance.
Swim in the sea. drink of the deep.
Embrace the mystery of all you can be.

    This is your time…
    (won’t you save me? )
    (this is your time)
    (won’t you save me? )

  6. Mark 10-38..But Jesus said unto them, Ye know not what ye ask: can ye drink of the cup that I drink of? And be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?
You have to understand the preceding verse to understand this particular baptism…
Mark 10-37 They said unto him, Grant unto us that we may sit, one on thy right hand, and the other on thy left hand, in thy glory.
The apostles did not understand that the wheat would be on the right hand and the tares on the left hand.. Nor did they understand there would be two baptisms. One of holy ghost and one of fire…Matthew 3-11, 12… He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and [with] fire: v.12…gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

There is more of this in Matthew 13-26-29…Jesus explains how the enemy sows tares among the wheat…Verses 37, 38, 39 and in the end of the world these tares will be gathered and burned… Take my word for it, it is Islam…The crusaders knew this.. They called Mohammed BAPHOMET which means baptism of fire…

The SEED both Jesus and Satan sow is THE WORD OF GOD, BUT IN SATAN’S CASE IT IS SATAN’S version of god’s words…Luke 8-11…Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 1 Peter 1-23..Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever.

Satan always counterfeits god.. Of course he would bring a gospel as did Jesus and come as a messiah like Jesus.. I.e. Mohammed.
Jesus said he will raise us up from death, some to the resurrection of the just and some to the resurrection of the damned…The just of course are born agains.. The DAMNED are those who believe the lie that damns them.. 2 thsss2.. This lie is Satan claiming he is the god of Abraham..

So then death worketh in us, but life in you. …2 Corinthians 4-12….
I think we are in a much later time frame than most know…I think we are here.. Rev 20-7…And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison,
I think Christians have lived and reigned with Christ for the 1000 years and the beast has been brought back for 7 years or 2 terms as president….
I have wondered if we will all be killed…I do not know, but I do know there is scripture that says we will be hidden during the wrath of god.. Which positively is Islam……
There are lots of tares to be gathered out of Christ’s church.. People that have changed and added to and taken away from the gospel…These are those of Matthew 13-19 – 23..These will be taken out by way of Islam…It is already happening in America…

  7. Her name was Cassie Bernall…

  8. I can believe God allows each of us to suffer in our own ways, marital problems, death of loved one, illness, financial problems, etc in order to work in us the same “baptism of suffering”. We may not be out preaching the gospel daily, but we are doing a good work with ourselves and close ones who see what we go through.

I remember the news about Washington Redskin Safety Sean Taylor’s murder and they interviewed his dad on television and I was moved by what he said. Humbly, he did not demand justice over the murderers, but simply thanked God for the blessing of having his son for those few years. The fact that this was national news in the sport world, I knew that this father preached the gospel of love and thanksgiving to thousands with that comment. We can do the same with what God puts on us.

    • Hi Mel

I think we are preaching the gospel by our actions. When we respond in a Christ-like manner during trouble or hardship, it speaks volumes.

  9. we do suffer in a lot of ways and people wonder how can you go through it.It’s caues of jesus.

  10. I’m scared I have tken the mark of the beast – I feel I am one of those false Christians and im only 20! I always want to break free from the worldy system but It gets harder as you grow older. The last three years have been hard for me spiritually…i willfully sinned and I feel like I am reprobate…reading stuff like this doesn’t even touch me…it’s like im emotionless…at other times it’s like something stirs within me but it feels like something is inside trying to fight against the realisation maybe demons. Also, I notice wherever I go, people look at me often like I’m weird and they behave very oddly around me…I just want to be free from them…all they want to do is submit me to their eveil schemes and New Age lifestyle! I also feel like I’m under witchcraft..and when I have a diasagreement with someone who is of another race it seems like I can’t be myself (like fro example, in England I have a genuine problem with the attitude of the English people) I don’t mean tot be rude but that is how I truly feel.

    • Hey Lee,

Have you accepted Jesus Christ into your heart…making a commitment to follow Him? Believing him to be the Son of G-D?

And what makes you think that you have taken the Mark of the Beast?

  11. Hi Lyndsey, Yes I have, about 4 years ago. I started going back to church then gave my life e.t.c but then started getting into some serious spiritual warfare reading books on warfare but then fell into sexual sin and have stayed there for like 3 years. On top of all this, I know I have been spiritually attacked and no one is to blame but myself but I have been through alot like losing my grandmother aand me thinking maybe me thinking that my sin killed her or that spiritually because I fell, God is judging my family or something is happeneing. I don’t really know how to explain it. Also I have always felt a weird stirring like all my sins have opened doorways for me to have demons in my life oppressing me. I also have other heart issues which will take long to go into but I’m so angry at God most times because of what is happening in my life. when I read these posts on false christians and the like, I think i’m one of them and the worst part is, my heart had gone hard like I have commited the unforgivable sin.

I’m cutting alot of things out because its too long to give you my observations and thinking patterns but basically I always feel spiritually attacked and I feel there weird sensations in my head like I have a mark or something like that! It’s very complicated. I have even had blasphemous thoughts and that I’m the antichrist.

    • hi Lee

First of all, you need to trust Jesus for your future, not man, or worry about demons. The demons bother all of us.

In fact, they usually bother the ones who belong to jesus, and ignore the evil people. This is because the evil people are already condemned, and the demons do not have to bother them.

the demons want to discourage you, and make you doubt your salvation, which is what they are doing now.

When you are alone, and these things happen, openly rebuke all demons in Jesus name. say out loud that you cover yourself with the blood of Jesus, and command that all demons are bound in Jesus name. There is no condemnation in Jesus!!!

Stay in touch with me. You are far from me, so discussions will have to be either here, on the site, or by private email.

You will get my private email with this message.

You are in my prayers. I feel like you are not condemned, but chosen by God to be a spiritual warrior for him. You just need encouragement and some advice and help.

      Do not give up!

  12. This article says The last baptism of Jesus was suffering and death.

Jesus was baptised 2009 in the Egyptian Koptic Ortodox church.
He could baptise himself because he is a priest but Jesus choosed the normal way.

  13. Marianne
I have been a clown all my life. No one has taken me seriuosly. But now I´m serious!

  14. I may not be the christian that most of you are I have trouble remembering what I read and under stand it I due know my lord was born and died on the cross for my salvation so I may have a way to heaven if I choose it that’s everyone choice I been through a lot in this life but I new I could because what I was and is going through I am not dueling it a lone and when I don’t see him is because he is caring me and if I must lose my life or give it up for another that’s what I would due when I make a mistake I again go to are lord and ask for forgiveness that’s the best part of it we have a loving god that will again for give us I know we will have to pay the price for loving are god but I will have no regret after what he want through for me I could never repay that
